The cross broadens the concept of family - the family of God.
Today, we delve into the profound words spoken by Jesus from the cross. These words reveal His heart and purpose as He endured the agony of crucifixion. In our previous discussions, we explored the first word of forgiveness and the second word of salvation. Now, we turn our attention to the third word, which showcases Jesus' affectionate nature.
As Jesus hung on the cross, His mother, Mary, along with her sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene, stood nearby. Amidst the chaos, Jesus noticed them and directed His words towards His mother and the disciple whom He loved, John.
Jesus addressed His mother, saying, "Woman, here is your son." Then, turning to John, He said, "Here is your mother." In that moment, John accepted Mary as his own mother.
This interaction reveals how the cross expands the concept of family within the family of God. Although Jesus had biological siblings, they did not believe in Him. However, Mary and John were faithful followers. Under the weight of the cross, Jesus united them in love. He redefined relationships based on belief and spirituality rather than blood ties.
Jesus' intention was to forge a bond of fellowship beneath the cross. Mary gained another son, and John gained a mother. This act exemplifies Jesus' teachings about leaving behind earthly relationships for the sake of the gospel. He promised that those who do so will receive a hundredfold in this present age.
Beneath the cross of Jesus, true Christian fellowship was born. All believers become part of the family of God, brothers and sisters in the Lord. This includes Mary and John, as well as you and me. The cross unites us all as members of the redeemed family.
Interestingly, John took Mary into his home after this encounter. He demonstrated his love for Jesus by caring for His mother. This practical act of love solidified their new relationship. Similarly, Jesus calls us to care for one another, especially the poor, widows, orphans, and those in need.
The cross serves as a powerful symbol of love and unity. It broadens our understanding of family, bringing believers together as one. Jesus entrusted His mother to John, and in doing so, He entrusted us with the responsibility to care for one another.
Let us embrace this call to love and care for our fellow believers. By doing so, we reflect the love of Christ and fulfill His desire for unity within the family of God. We are grateful to be part of this family, washed in His Spirit and cleansed by His blood. Together, we journey through life, rejoicing in our bond as children of God.
