Series: Action [#222]

FAITHFUL- FINISH STRONG

2 Timothy 4:1-22

Introduction:

As we complete our Series, “Action” after 222 Sermons; I want us to talk about finishing strong. Since March 22, 2020; we have studied through the Book of Acts as well as all of Paul’s Letters- We have talked about many aspects of our faith in Jesus Christ. I have told you many stories through the years, about Tharon and Tyler’s swimming. One of the main reasons that the Drake boys have won so many swimming races is because they would always finish strong.

2 Timothy 4:1-2

Finish strong by…

1. Preaching the Word.

Paul emphasized to Timothy that it is God who calls people to preach. It is God who gives us the words to speak. The word preach means to proclaim. Every Christian is responsible for proclaiming the Word of God. You are to be prepared at all times to proclaim God’s Word. It does not matter what you are going through or what is going on around you. Make sure that you study the Word regularly so that when God puts people in front of you to speak to, the Word is on your heart and mind. Understand your audience and their needs when you speak. Do not forget the importance of God’s Word. It is useful for doctrine, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness. Avoid the temptation to focus only on popular messages; and battle false teachers and their false teachings.

2 Timothy 4:3-4

2. Remaining steadfast in truth.

The rise of false teachers and false teachings is nothing new to us. Many people accept these false teachings because they want to hear things that cater to their desires rather than sound doctrine. Society is always pushing the World’s preferences over biblical truth. This is why spiritual discernment of the truth is so important. Do not allow people to convince you of believing mythical things.

2 Timothy 4:5-8

3. Enduring suffering.

Suffering is a reality of the Christian life, just as Jesus Himself endured trials. Life is difficult and hardships are part of it; but God can use that to strengthen you. Christians, fulfill your Ministry. Stay committed to God’s calling on your life regardless of what is happening. Be watchful and self-controlled. Find your strength in the Lord by relying on God’s grace. When you are weak, God is strong. Paul had lived a life of faithfulness to God. Paul said that he was going to receive a crown of righteousness. Paul knew that God was going to reward him for his faithful service. Remember to store up your treasures in Heaven, where they will not rot or rust. Paul looked forward to the day that God would bring him home to Heaven. Do you look forward to Jesus’ coming?

2 Timothy 4:9-22

4. Building and valuing relationships.

Paul wanted Timothy to go to him quickly. Even Paul needed fellowship and support. The Christian life is not meant to be lived in isolation but in community. Paul valued his loyal friends like Timothy, Luke, and others in the early Church who supported him; but he also mentioned those who were not loyal friends. Demas abandoned Paul for worldly pursuits, highlighting the reality of betrayal in relationships. We need to have intentional relationships where we mentor and disciple one another. Christians, we must pray for one another and help one another.

Conclusion:

As we conclude this 4½ year Sermon Series- I challenge you to fight the good fight and continue to run a good race. Paul was at the end of his life and he faced it with confidence and hope. Each of you need to commit to finish well in your life, ministries, and relationships with fellow believers. Embrace your calling, endure challenges, and support one another.
