Summary: What do you do when faith feels fragile and doubt creeps in?

NEED: Cracked mug

Introduction: When Faith Isn’t Easy

Most of us know what it’s like to have strong faith, right?

- well, at least for a while.

* When life is steady.

* When prayers are being answered.

* When things make sense.

But what about the seasons

• When faith feels . . . thin?

• When prayers seem unanswered?

• When we’re tired, disappointed, or afraid?

This passage in Mark 9 is one of the most honest moments in the whole Bible — because it tells us that faith doesn’t have to be perfect to be real.

And that’s very good news for us.

Object Illustration: The Cracked Mug

(Hold up a cracked or chipped mug.)

A cracked cup.

It’s not perfect

Now, I could throw it away — or I could still use it.

It still holds coffee.

Not perfectly.

A cracked cup may leak a little.

But - it still does what it was made to do.

And I think for many of us, that’s exactly how our faith feels at times – cracked.

Not holding – leaking a bit

We might assume faith has to be flawless to be useful —

but Jesus shows us otherwise.

1. Faith Doesn’t Always Look Confident

When we meet the father in this story, he is exhausted.

His son has been suffering for years.

He’s tried everything.

He’s even taken the boy to Jesus’ disciples — and they couldn’t help.

So now he stands before Jesus, saying:

“If you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”

This is not confident faith.

It’s a cracked mug faith.

It’s fragile.

It’s weary.

It’s almost afraid to hope.

But notice this: he still brings his son to Jesus.

That is faith.

Faith is not having everything figured out.

Faith is not confidence without questions.

Faith is direction —

choosing where to turn when life hurts.

2. Jesus Welcomes Honest Faith

Jesus responds:

“Everything is possible for one who believes.”

And immediately the father replies with one of the most honest prayers ever prayed:

“I do believe; help my unbelief!”

• He doesn’t pretend.

• He doesn’t polish his words.

• He doesn’t fake confidence.

He brings his mixed faith to Jesus

— belief and doubt together.

And Jesus does not reject him.

- That matters.

Jesus doesn’t say, “Come back when your faith is stronger.”

He doesn’t shame him for his doubts.

He doesn’t withhold compassion.

Jesus welcomes honest faith.

3. Weak Faith in a Strong Jesus Is Enough

Here’s the heart of this passage:

The miracle doesn’t happen because the father’s faith is impressive.

It happens because Jesus is powerful.

Faith is not about how strong you are —

it’s about who you trust.

Even cracked faith, placed in a strong Saviour, is enough.

• You don’t need heroic belief.

• You don’t need perfect prayers.

• You don’t need to hide your doubts.

You just need to bring what you have to Jesus.

4. Faith Grows Through Dependence

Later, the disciples ask Jesus why they couldn’t drive out the spirit.

Jesus replies:

“This kind can come out only by prayer.”

• Not better technique.

• Not more effort.

• Not self-confidence.

Prayer.

Which is another way of saying: . . . dependence.

Hard seasons of faith don’t mean we’re failing —

they often mean God is teaching us to rely on Him more deeply.

Sometimes faith grows - not through answers,

but through surrender.

Gospel Moment: Will You Let Him Carry You?

This story points us forward to the heart of the gospel.

Jesus doesn’t just step into this family’s pain —

He steps into ours.

He carries human weakness all the way to the cross.

At the cross, Jesus takes the weight we cannot carry:

• our cracked brokenness

• our cracked doubt

• our cracked fear

• our cracked sin

And He doesn’t ask us to pretend we’re strong.

The invitation of Jesus is simple — but costly:

“Follow Me.”

Not when we’re perfect.

Not when we have it all together.

But now just as we are.

we don’t have to carry everything alone anymore.

The question is this:

Will you let Him carry you?

Will you trust Him — not with perfect faith,

but with honest faith?

That is what following Jesus looks like.

And you can start following Him – today – right now!

Practical Challenge: Pray the Honest Prayer

Today, and on through this week, I want to encourage you to pray one simple prayer each day:

“Lord, I believe — help my unbelief.”

• Say it when faith feels strong.

• Say it when faith feels weak.

• Say it when you don’t know what else to say.

[hold mug]

Bring your cracked mug faith to Jesus — and trust Him to fill it.
