Summary: Hebrews 11
Faith That Moves Mountains
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” – Hebrews 11:1 (NIV)
Dr. Joseph Lowery, often called the “Dean of the Civil Rights Movement,” exemplified a faith that could not be shaken. His life was marked by an unyielding trust in God’s promises, even in the face of systemic oppression, injustice, and daunting challenges. Dr. Lowery’s powerful faith fueled his work for equality and justice, reminding us that with God, all things are possible.
He often encouraged others to embrace faith as a catalyst for change—not just for personal transformation but for the transformation of society. Dr. Lowery taught us that faith requires action. His leadership in founding the Southern Christian Leadership Conference alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an extension of his belief that God calls each of us to participate in creating a just and loving world.
Dr. Lowery’s legacy challenges us today: Do we have the confidence to believe in what we cannot yet see? Are we trusting God to guide us as we step out to make a difference? Let us remember that faith is not passive but active—it is the bridge between our prayers and the reality God calls us to build.
“Faith is the foundation of everything I do. Without faith, I would not be able to see the mountains move.” (Dr. Joseph Lowery)
Today, reflect on an area in your life where you need to trust God more fully. Take one action step toward living out your faith, believing that God’s power is at work even in the unseen.
Prayer: Gracious God, we thank You for the example of Dr. Joseph Lowery, who walked boldly in faith and encouraged others to do the same. Help us to cultivate a faith that is both confident and active, trusting that You are with us in every step. Teach us to live out our faith in ways that bring justice, healing, and hope to a world in need. May we honor You with our words, actions, and unwavering belief in Your promises. Amen.
