Explores the nature of faith as an active trust in God, the example of Jesus' unwavering faith, and the visible fruits of our faith.

Introduction

Good morning, dear family in Christ. It is indeed a blessing to be gathered here today, united by our shared faith, and warmed by the love of our Savior, Jesus Christ. In this sacred space, we are reminded of the deep well of wisdom that is the Word of God, and the transformative power it holds.

Today, we are turning our hearts and minds towards a powerful passage of scripture, one that speaks to the very core of our Christian walk. It is found in the Epistle to the Hebrews, chapter 11, verse 1:

"Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."

This verse, dear friends, is a beacon of hope, a guiding light that illuminates our path in times of uncertainty, and a firm foundation upon which we can build our lives.

Billy Graham once said, "The Bible teaches that faith is the only approach that we have to God. No man has sins forgiven, no man goes to heaven, no man has assurance of peace and happiness, until he has faith in Jesus Christ." Indeed, without faith, we are like a ship adrift at sea, tossed about by the winds of doubt and fear. But with faith, we are anchored in the truth of God's promises, buoyed by His love, and propelled forward by His purpose for our lives.

Fostering the Faith We Need

As we consider the depth of our faith, we must first acknowledge that faith is not something we can generate on our own. It is a gift from God, a divine spark that He ignites in our hearts. This faith, once kindled, needs to be nurtured and grown. It's much like a garden. You can't just plant a seed and walk away, expecting it to thrive. It needs sunlight, water, and care. Similarly, our faith needs the light of God's word, the living water of His Spirit, and the care of a supportive Christian community.

The Word of God: This is the primary source of nourishment for our faith. It is through the scriptures that we come to know God, understand His character, and grasp His promises. The Bible is not just a book; it's a love letter from God, a guide for life, and a mirror that reflects our true selves. As we read, meditate, and apply the Word, our faith grows stronger. We begin to see God's hand in our lives, recognize His voice, and experience His power.

The Spirit of God: The Holy Spirit is our Helper, our Comforter, and our Teacher. He convicts us of sin, guides us into truth, and empowers us to live godly lives. He also assures us of our status as children of God and helps us to cry out to Him in intimate, personal prayer. As we yield to the Spirit, our faith becomes more than just intellectual assent; it becomes a lived experience.

A supportive Christian community: We were not meant to walk this journey of faith alone. We need the encouragement, accountability, and love that come from being part of a body of believers. The church is not just a building or an organization; it's a family. As we worship together, serve together, and bear one another's burdens, our faith is strengthened and our love for God deepens.

Nurturing our faith is about what we give: Our faith grows as we step out in obedience to God, take risks for His kingdom, and love others as He has loved us. Faith is like a muscle; it strengthens as we use it. As we step out in faith, we see God's faithfulness, and our trust in Him grows.

Trials and challenges can serve to strengthen our faith: When we face difficulties, we are driven to depend on God, to cling to His promises, and to experience His faithfulness. These trials are not pleasant, but they produce in us a faith that is tested, proven, and pure.

Our faith grows as we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus: He is the author and perfecter of our faith. He is our model, our mentor, and our motivation. As we look to Him, we are inspired to persevere, to run the race with endurance, and to keep the faith.
