Immanuel Baptist Church, Wagoner, OK

Rick Boyne

Message Point: We must trust God and His Word rather than our feelings.

Focus Passage: Proverbs 3:5-6

Supplemental Passage: All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; (2 Timothy 3:16 NASB)

Introduction: When we get duped into following our feelings instead of being obedient to God's word, all kinds of problems will surface.

I. God’s Word is truth, not subject to feelings

a. “The sum of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous judgments is everlasting.” Ps 119:160

b. Feelings are fleeting and often unreliable.

i. "The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it? (Jeremiah 17:9 NASB)

c. God’s Word is the standard of truth, not our emotions or perceptions.

d. Truth is not defined by how we feel, but by what God has spoken.

e. Anchor your beliefs and actions in God’s unchanging Word, especially when emotions conflict.

II. Obedience demonstrates love not just emotion

a. Jesus said, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” John 14:15

b. Love for God isn’t proven by how passionately we feel, but by how faithfully we obey.

c. True discipleship often means obeying even when we don't feel like it.

d. Obedience is the fruit of faith and the evidence of genuine devotion.

e. Let obedience be your response, even when your heart wavers.

III. Faith Walks forward while feelings pull back

a. For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7

b. Feelings can lead us away from the will of God if they are not submitted to His Word.

c. Faith chooses to trust God’s direction even when our emotions say otherwise.

d. Maturity in Christ means walking with conviction, not just comfort.

e. Take the next step in faith, even when it’s uncomfortable—God will honor your trust.

Application/Call to Obedience: God’s Word must have the final say in our lives. Our feelings are real, but they are not always right. When we value His Word above all, and walk in obedience, we honor Him and find lasting peace. The greatest obedience anyone can have is when they respond to God’s call upon their life for salvation. The Bible says, “that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.” (Romans 10:9-10 NASB)
