Extraordinary Humility

March 24, 2019 Morning Service

Immanuel Baptist Church, Wagoner, OK

Rick Boyne

Message Point: Jesus gave us the perfect example of extraordinary humility.

Focus Passage: Philippians 2:2-8

Introduction: I wanted to preach a sermon on “Extraordinary Service” but every time I studied “service” I found humility. So, in order to preach about service, I must preach about “Extraordinary Humility.” And where are the best examples of humility in the Bible? They are all found in Jesus.

I. Others-centered

a. The entire life of Jesus was centered on others

b. But Jesus was saying, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." (Luke 23:34a NASB)

c. When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick. (Matthew 14:14 NASB)

II. Service-oriented

a. The entire life of Jesus was of serving

b. "It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many." (Matthew 20:26-28 NASB)

c. Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God, got up from supper, and laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself. Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. (John 13:3-5 NASB)

III. Obedience-focused

a. The entire life of Jesus was focused on being obedient to the Father

b. Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. (John 5:19 NASB)

c. saying, "Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done." (Luke 22:42 NASB)

Application/Invitation: What area of your life do you need to practice humility? Are you self-centered? Do you prefer to be served than to serve? Are you disobedient to the Lord in any area? Humble yourself before God.
