INTRODUCTION:
In today’s world, mediocrity has become a norm in many areas of life, but God never designed His work to be approached with laziness or a casual attitude. The Kingdom of God is built by diligent hands, committed hearts, and minds that pursue excellence. Every believer, especially those involved in ministry or any church-related responsibility, must embrace a standard of excellence that reflects the nature and glory of God.
Excellence in church work is not about perfectionism, pride, or competition—it is about honouring God with our best, being faithful stewards, and becoming effective in fulfilling the Great Commission. When we serve the Lord with excellence, we draw others to Him and become worthy examples to fellow believers.
In this message, we will examine what it means to work for God with excellence, the characteristics of an excellent spirit in service, and how we can overcome mediocrity in our assignment in the Body of Christ.
1. EXCELLENCE BEGINS WITH THE RIGHT HEART
a) A heart devoted to God (2 Chronicles 16:9):
God is looking for those whose hearts are fully committed to Him. Excellence flows from a heart that desires to glorify God above all else.
b) A sincere desire to please God (Colossians 3:23):
Whatever we do should be done heartily, as to the Lord and not unto men. Our motivation in church work must be to please God first.
c) A heart that fears God (Proverbs 1:7):
Reverence for God produces a sense of responsibility and diligence in how we serve Him.
d) A heart that loves people (1 Corinthians 13:1-3):
Without love, our service loses its value. Excellence involves genuine care for the people we serve.
Biblical Example: David served with a heart after God, showing integrity and excellence as a shepherd, warrior, and king (Acts 13:22).
2. EXCELLENCE REQUIRES DILIGENCE AND PREPARATION
a) Diligence in responsibilities (Romans 12:11):
We must not be slothful in business but fervent in spirit, serving the Lord with enthusiasm and commitment.
b) Preparation before service (2 Timothy 2:15):
Study and prepare to show yourself approved—a workman who does not need to be ashamed.
c) Consistency in effort (1 Corinthians 15:58):
Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing your labour is not in vain.
d) Willingness to grow and improve (Proverbs 4:7):
Get wisdom and understanding, and seek to become better at what God has called you to do.
Biblical Example: Ezra prepared his heart to seek the law of the Lord, to do it, and to teach in Israel (Ezra 7:10).
3. EXCELLENCE REFLECTS IN OUR ATTITUDE AND CONDUCT
a) Integrity in all we do (Titus 2:7):
In everything, set an example by doing what is good. Show integrity and seriousness in your work.
b) Faithfulness in small tasks (Luke 16:10):
He who is faithful in little will be faithful in much. Small assignments should be treated with the same seriousness as large ones.
c) Joyful service without complaining (Philippians 2:14):
Do all things without grumbling or arguing. Excellence includes having the right attitude.
d) Respect for leadership and teamwork (Hebrews 13:17):
Obey those who lead you and work in unity. No one achieves excellence alone.
Biblical Example: Daniel distinguished himself with an excellent spirit and was preferred above others (Daniel 6:3).
4. EXCELLENCE IS SUSTAINED THROUGH SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE
a) Prayer keeps us aligned with God’s purpose (Luke 18:1):
Consistent prayer fuels spiritual strength and divine direction in service.
b) The Word of God keeps us focused (Psalm 119:105):
Scripture guides our actions and ensures our work aligns with God’s will.
c) Fasting sharpens our sensitivity to God (Isaiah 58:6):
Times of consecration empower us for more effective service.
d) Fellowship strengthens and refines us (Hebrews 10:25):
Regular gathering with other believers sharpens our spirit and encourages us to remain excellent.
Biblical Example: Jesus often withdrew to pray and maintained spiritual disciplines to fulfil His mission (Luke 5:16).
5. EXCELLENCE GLORIFIES GOD AND IMPACTS OTHERS
a) God is glorified when we serve with excellence (Matthew 5:16):
Let your light shine so others may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
b) Excellence attracts favour and opportunities (Proverbs 22:29):
Do you see a man diligent in his work? He will stand before kings, not mere men.
c) Excellence inspires and motivates others (1 Timothy 4:12):
Be an example to believers in word, conduct, love, spirit, faith, and purity.
d) Excellence leaves a lasting legacy (Hebrews 11:4):
Even after Abel died, his excellent offering continued to speak.
Biblical Example: The early church served with gladness and excellence, which led to favour and daily increase (Acts 2:46-47).
CONCLUSION:
Church work is sacred. It deserves our best, not our leftovers. Excellence is not optional for those who truly desire to honour God—it is a reflection of His character in us. As believers, let us rise above mediocrity and serve with distinction, knowing that we are accountable to the King of kings.
