Every Mother’s Reward
Exodus 2:1-10
May 11, 2008 FBC, Chester Mike Fogerson, Pastor
Introduction
A Story of the baby found in the dumpster in St. Louis this week.
1 Made the news because it goes against every parental instinct that we have written in our being, soul.
2 Parents are supposed to take care of their children, keep them safe, never harm or neglect them.
B Turn to Exodus 2:1-10-God has something to tell us on every page.
1 The Pharaoh had long forgotten the ministry of Joseph.
a Years before, Hebrews were treated as guests in the house of Egypt-now, they were oppressed as slaves.
b Pharaoh saw them as a threat (if Egypt was invaded, he believed the Israelites would join forces with the invading army. 600,000 males over the age of 20, & when you count the women & children nearly 2 million people).
c He attempted to suppress their threat with 3 different phases:
aa Made life hard for the adults
bb Kill the Jewish boys at birth (partial-birth abortion/Shiphrah & Puah, Directors of the Foreign Midwife Agency)
cc Drowning the male babies
2 If these plans had worked, the Hebrews (Jews) would have been wiped out.
a The future generation of men-dead
b The girls would have eventually married Egyptian slaves & been absorbed into the Egyptian race.
3 Throughout history no other people group has been more hunted or hurt, or suffered more than the Jews.
a Every nation who has hunted/hurt/made them suffer, has suffered God’s judgment & wrath (Babylon, Egypt, Hitler/Stalin, Abinjihnjah)
b And I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse . And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed." Gen 12:3 (NASB)
4 Now a man from the house of Levi went and married a daughter of Levi. 2 The woman conceived and bore a son; and when she saw that he was beautiful , she hid him for three months. 3 But when she could hide him no longer, she got him a wicker basket and covered it over with tar and pitch. Then she put the child into it and set it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile. 4 His sister stood at a distance to find out what would happen to him.
5 The daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the Nile, with her maidens walking alongside the Nile; and she saw the basket among the reeds and sent her maid, and she brought it to her. 6 When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the boy was crying. And she had pity on him and said, "This is one of the Hebrews’ children." 7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, "Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women that she may nurse the child for you?" 8 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, "Go ahead." So the girl went and called the child’s mother. 9 Then Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, "Take this child away and nurse him for me and I will give you your wages." So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. And she named him Moses , and said, "Because I drew him out of the water." Ex 2:1-10 (NASB)
I Moses’ family
A Slavery
1 Amram/Jochebed
a 400-420 years (slavery for 4 generations of 100 years)
b Broke/poor (knew no other way)
2 I was born in bondage
a Mom, dad, great, great, great...grandfather Adam
b Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned...Romans 5:12 (NASB)
Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. John 8:34 (NASB)
B Helpless
1 Is there anything on the terrestrial ball any more helpless than a baby (much less a baby in the river)?
a That’s Moses! He’s an OUTCAST
b His set of lungs got the princess’ attention
2 Unless we come to Him as a little child, we will not inherit the Kingdom of God.
a We are helpless, without excuse
b Totally at His mercy, we cry out, "Abba" on the river-we are never alone.
c Outcast-His outcast
C Death sentence
1 Pharaoh (the oppressor) wanted to kill, steal, destroy him
a The devil’s first plan didn’t succeed (partial-birth)
b While the devil is projecting Moses’ death, God is preparing his salvation.
2 The devil has hated us (you & me) ever since we were born.
a Liar, cheat, scoundrel, murderer, and he wants you to go to hell, to keep you in bondage.
