Summary: A lesson in evangelism
Matthew 10:1-4 “He called to him his twelve disciples…the names of the twelve apostles…”
• 1st time Matthew records the twelve apostles (one who is sent out; an ambassador).
• The disciples are always listed in this manner:
o Peter (1st) Andrew, James, John.
o Philip (5th) Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew.
o James (9th) Thaddaeus, Simon and Judas.
? Peter/Philip/James had leadership positions/roles over the others.
? Jesus was establishing a discipleship culture.
Matthew 10:5-6 “Go nowhere near the Gentiles or Samaritans.”
• This is not a prohibition of the wider message of the Gospel but the priority of the message (the lost sheep).
Matthew 10:7 “The kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
• Liberation from sin (the real issue) not the oppression from the Romans.
Matthew 10:8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse leapers, cast out demons.”
• The purpose of miracles: to restore people to their full humanity!
• Why is there so much suffering in this world v How is God going to work through me to end the suffering in this world?
Matthew 10:9-10 Acquire no gold, silver, copper, take no bag with you for your journey.”
• Jesus wants us to trust him for the journey.
• Expect God to meet your needs!!
• Should pastors get paid?
o Acts 4:32-35 – this is how the church should be (community based / community outreach.)
• The Son of Man has no place to lay his head (Matthew 8:20)
• The Call of Abram (Genesis 12:1)
• We are on a journey of faith!
Matthew 10:11-15
• Peace will come to those who receive and accept the apostles.
• Judgement comes to those who refuse to receive and accept the apostles.
• The judgement (John 3:19-21)
