A study of the Gospel of John 13: 31 – 38

Introduction

Today, we will be studying the passage from the Gospel of John, chapter 13, verses 31 to 38. In this passage, Jesus speaks to his disciples about the importance of getting their house in order. Just as Hezekiah was told to set his house in order before his death, Jesus urges his followers to take a hard look at their lives and make necessary changes.

Understanding the Context

Before we delve into the passage, it is important to note that these words were spoken by Jesus as he prepared for his impending death. They hold great significance as they reveal Jesus' final instructions to his disciples before his crucifixion. While some of the teachings may have broader implications, they were primarily directed towards the apostles in their mission to establish the church.

The Glorification of Jesus

Jesus begins by acknowledging that the time has come for him to be glorified. He speaks of how God will be glorified in him and how he will be glorified in God. This glorification encompasses both his sacrificial death on the cross and his subsequent resurrection and exaltation. Jesus willingly accepts his destiny and recognizes that through his self-offering, both he and God the Father will be glorified.

The New Commandment

Jesus then addresses his disciples as "little children" and emphasizes the importance of love. He gives them a new commandment: to love one another just as he has loved them. This love is to be a distinguishing mark of his disciples. By loving one another, they will demonstrate their allegiance to Jesus and attract others to follow him.

Peter's Response

Peter, always eager and impulsive, asks Jesus where he is going. Jesus explains that Peter cannot follow him at that moment but will follow him later. Peter insists that he is willing to lay down his life for Jesus' sake. However, Jesus predicts that Peter will deny him three times before the rooster crows.

Lessons Learned

Peter's boastful words serve as a reminder of the dangers of empty talk. Despite his initial enthusiasm, Peter's fear leads him to deny Jesus. This failure, however, becomes a catalyst for growth and humility among the disciples. Jesus, in his forgiving nature, restores Peter and teaches them all a valuable lesson.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Jesus' message to "get your house in order" is a call for his disciples to examine their lives and make necessary changes. He emphasizes the importance of love as a distinguishing mark of his followers. While Peter's failure highlights the human tendency to falter, Jesus offers forgiveness and restoration. As we reflect on this passage, let us also consider our own lives and strive to align our actions with our words. May we seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to help us walk in love and obedience to our Lord Jesus Christ.
