Introduction

Today, we gather to reflect on the last seven sayings of Jesus Christ. These profound statements not only reveal how Jesus lived but also teach us how to face death with childlike trust in our Heavenly Father. In His final moments on the cross, Jesus demonstrated the ultimate act of surrender and showed us the path to peacefully departing from this world.

The Seventh Saying: "Father, into Your Hands I Commend My Spirit" (Luke 23:44-47)

In this seventh and final saying, Jesus utters eight words that encapsulate trust, comfort, and security. He addresses God as His Father, signifying a deep relationship and demonstrating how we should entrust our lives to Him.

1. Trust:

Jesus places His complete trust in the hands of His Father. He knows that there is no one more trustworthy than God. Just like a child falling asleep in their father's arms, Jesus surrenders His spirit with unwavering faith. We, too, can confidently entrust every aspect of our lives to God's faithful hands. Some may fear putting their lives in God's hands because they are unsure of His plans or reluctant to give up control. However, we must remember that God's thoughts for us are good, filled with hope and a prosperous future.

2. Comfort:

In the midst of His suffering, Jesus finds comfort in knowing that He will find rest in the hands of His Father. Despite the pain and agony, He is reassured that everything will be alright. We, too, can find solace in God's hands, knowing that He cares for us and brings cheer to our souls. When we face challenges or feel discouraged, we can turn to God for comfort and find peace in His presence.

3. Security:

Jesus recognizes the security found in His Father's hands. He understands that His spirit will be safe and protected. The hands of God are strong and reliable, offering a sense of security that surpasses any other. Just as Jesus declares that no one can snatch His sheep from His hand, we can trust that God will keep us secure. We need not fear death or any other circumstances because we are held firmly in the hands of our Heavenly Father.

Conclusion

As we contemplate the final words of Jesus, let us remember the profound trust, comfort, and security He found in the hands of His Father. Jesus willingly closed His eyes and surrendered His spirit, knowing that a better life awaited Him beyond the cross. We, too, can experience joy and peace by entrusting our lives to God. Whether it is our finances, relationships, struggles, or future, we can confidently say, "Father, into Your hands I commend my spirit." When the time comes for us to depart from this world, may we do so with the assurance that we will awaken in the loving embrace of our Heavenly Father, who will say, "Welcome, my child!"
