Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
The main point of this sermon is to explore the protection, comfort, and trust that comes from dwelling in God's 'secret place' as described in Psalms 91:1-2.
Good morning, church family! Today, we’ll be diving into a beautiful passage that speaks of safety, refuge, and the presence of God. It's Psalms 91 verses 1 and 2. These verses paint a vivid picture of the benefits, protection, and promises that come from dwelling in what the psalmist calls "the secret place."
Charles Spurgeon, a respected Christian author, once said, "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall never lack protective shade." Now that is a powerful reminder of our security in God's presence!
Let's read the passage together: "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, 'He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.'" (Psalms 91:1-2)
Let's pray: Dear God, as we explore Your Word today, we pray that You would open our hearts to understand and absorb its truth. Lead us into Your secret place, help us to experience the comfort of Your shelter, and enable us to trust in Your promises. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Now, let's unpack these verses and explore the treasures that dwelling in God's 'secret place' can bring into our lives!
The secret place of the Most High, as described in Psalms 91, is a metaphor for the intimate, personal relationship we can have with God. This is not a physical location but a spiritual state of being where we are in constant communion with our Creator. It is in this secret place that we experience the benefits of dwelling with God.
One of the most significant benefits of dwelling in the secret place is the experience of God's presence. This is not a fleeting or sporadic encounter, but a constant, abiding presence. The psalmist says we shall "abide under the shadow of the Almighty." This is a picture of closeness, of being under the protective care of God. In His presence, we find peace that surpasses all understanding, joy that is unspeakable, and love that is unfathomable. His presence is our source of strength and our refuge in times of trouble.
Another benefit of dwelling in the secret place is the protection it offers. The psalmist describes God as our refuge and fortress. In ancient times, a fortress was a place of safety, a stronghold that could withstand enemy attacks. Similarly, God is our spiritual fortress, protecting us from the assaults of the enemy. He shields us from harm, guards us from danger, and defends us against the attacks of the devil. In the secret place, we are safe and secure, hidden in the cleft of the Rock.
In the secret place, we also find guidance and wisdom. As we dwell in God's presence, we have access to His infinite wisdom. He guides us in the way we should go, leading us in paths of righteousness. He gives us discernment to make wise decisions, and understanding to navigate the complexities of life. In the secret place, we are not left to our own devices, but are guided by the One who sees the end from the beginning.
Moreover, dwelling in the secret place cultivates our trust in God. The psalmist declares, "My God, in Him I will trust." Trust is not a one-time event, but a process that grows and deepens over time. As we dwell in the secret place, we witness God's faithfulness, experience His goodness, and see His hand at work in our lives. This fosters a deep, unshakeable trust in Him. We learn to rely on Him, not on our own understanding, and to trust Him with all our heart.
Lastly, dwelling in the secret place brings rest and renewal. In the hustle and bustle of life, we often find ourselves weary and burdened. But in the secret place, we find rest for our souls. We are refreshed and renewed as we spend time in God's presence, basking in His love and grace. We are rejuvenated, not just physically, but also emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.
Dwelling in the secret place is not a luxury, but a necessity for every believer. It is in this place of intimacy with God that we experience His presence, enjoy His protection, receive His guidance, cultivate our trust in Him, and find rest and renewal. These are the benefits of dwelling in the secret place of the Most High.
