INTRODUCTION:

Many believers today fall into the trap of passivity, where they claim to follow Christ but lack the zeal and commitment to actively live out their faith. Christianity is not just about attending church services or bearing a Christian name; it requires action, devotion, and an unwavering stand for the truth. The Bible warns against lukewarmness, making it clear that God desires His children to be fervent in spirit and actively engaged in His work.

A passive Christian is one who is indifferent to spiritual matters, easily swayed by worldly distractions, and hesitant to take a bold stand for righteousness. Such a person neither grows spiritually nor impacts others positively. The danger of passivity is that it can lead to spiritual stagnation, compromise, and even eventual backsliding. Jesus calls His followers to be salt and light, meaning we must influence the world around us for His glory.

To avoid being a passive Christian, one must cultivate a strong prayer life, study and apply God’s Word, engage in evangelism, and actively serve in the body of Christ. The Christian life is a call to action, not complacency. In this sermon, we will explore key ways to overcome spiritual passivity and become effective ambassadors for Christ.

1. BE FERVENT IN SPIRIT

A believer must be on fire for God, not lukewarm. The Bible commands us to serve the Lord with zeal and enthusiasm. Passivity leads to spiritual coldness, but fervency ensures continuous growth and divine encounters.

a) Spiritual Fire Must Be Maintained (Romans 12:11)

Just as fire needs fuel, a believer must stay committed to prayer, worship, and the Word to keep their passion alive.

b) God Rejects Lukewarmness (Revelation 3:15-16)

A passive Christian is neither hot nor cold, making them ineffective in God's kingdom.

c) Passion for God Brings Divine Visitation (Acts 2:3-4)

When believers are fervent in spirit, they experience fresh outpourings of the Holy Spirit.

d) Spiritual Slumber Leads to Defeat (Matthew 25:5-6)

The parable of the ten virgins shows that those who are not alert and prepared will miss their moment of divine breakthrough.

e) Biblical Example: Elijah’s Zeal for God (1 Kings 18:36-39)

Elijah’s fervency led to fire from heaven, proving God’s power and silencing false prophets.

2. BE A DOER OF THE WORD

Christianity is not just about hearing the Word but putting it into action. Passive believers hear but do not obey, while active Christians live by the principles of God's Word.

a) Faith Without Works is Dead (James 2:17)

A true Christian life must reflect obedience and righteous deeds.

b) Obedience Brings Blessings (Deuteronomy 28:1-2)

Those who do what God commands experience divine favour and success.

c) God’s Word Transforms Lives (Romans 12:2)

Applying the Word leads to personal transformation and spiritual maturity.

d) The Enemy Targets Passive Christians (Matthew 7:26-27)

Those who hear but do not act on the Word are easily shaken by life’s storms.

e) Biblical Example: The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37)

Unlike the priest and Levite, the Samaritan acted on his faith by helping the wounded man.

3. BE BOLD IN YOUR FAITH

Fear and passivity often go hand in hand. A Christian who is bold in their faith will take a stand for righteousness, preach the gospel, and resist the enemy.

a) God Has Not Given Us a Spirit of Fear (2 Timothy 1:7)

Boldness in faith comes from the Holy Spirit, not human effort.

b) Confessing Christ Publicly is Crucial (Matthew 10:32-33)

Those who deny Christ before men will be denied before God.

c) The Righteous are as Bold as a Lion (Proverbs 28:1)

Fear cripples, but boldness empowers believers to overcome obstacles.

d) Spiritual Warfare Requires Courage (Ephesians 6:10-11)

Christians must put on the whole armour of God to stand against the devil.

e) Biblical Example: Peter and John Before the Sanhedrin (Acts 4:18-20)

They refused to stop preaching about Jesus despite threats and persecution.

4. BE ACTIVE IN EVANGELISM

A passive Christian keeps their faith to themselves, while an active believer shares the gospel and wins souls for Christ. Evangelism is a key mark of a committed Christian.

a) We Are Called to Make Disciples (Matthew 28:19-20)

Every believer has the responsibility to spread the gospel.

b) Evangelism is a Sign of Spiritual Maturity (Hebrews 5:12-14)

Mature Christians actively share their faith and help others grow.

c) Heaven Rejoices Over One Soul Saved (Luke 15:7)

Every soul won brings great joy in heaven.

d) Failing to Evangelise is Disobedience (Ezekiel 3:18-19)

We are accountable for sharing the gospel with those around us.

e) Biblical Example: Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch (Acts 8:26-39)

Philip actively obeyed the Holy Spirit and led a man to Christ.
