Introduction

Good Morning, church family! Today, we're going to be diving into an important topic that every believer needs to understand and embrace: the necessity of Jesus as the head of the Church. We're going to talk about the importance of keeping Jesus in His rightful place and how the life of the church depends on Jesus as our Head.

Dustin Benge once said, "So the church receives all of its life from Christ and has no life apart from him. They are one. He is the head and we, as the church, are the body."

Let's read our scripture for today: Ephesians 1:22-23

"And God placed all things under His feet and appointed Him to be head over everything for the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills everything in every way."

Father God, we invite Your presence in our midst today as we delve into Your word. Open our hearts and minds to understand the depth of Your love for us and the important role that Jesus, our Savior, plays as the head of our church. The Necessity of Jesus as Head of the Church

The necessity of Jesus as the Head of the Church is not merely a theological concept but a practical reality that shapes the life and health of the church. The church, as described in the Bible, is not a building or an organization, but a body of believers, united by their faith in Jesus Christ. And just as a physical body needs a head to function, so too does the church need Jesus as its Head to thrive and fulfill its God-given mission.

The source of its life: In Colossians 1:18, Paul writes, "And He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything He might have the supremacy." Jesus, through His death and resurrection, has conquered sin and death, and it is from Him that the church draws its life. Without Jesus as its Head, the church would be like a body without life, incapable of functioning or fulfilling its purpose.

Provides direction and guidance: Just as the head directs the body, Jesus directs His church. He guides us through His Word, the Bible, and through the Holy Spirit, who dwells in every believer. As we submit to Jesus' headship, we can trust that He will lead us in the right direction, even when the path may seem uncertain or challenging.

Ensures unity among believers: In Ephesians 4:15-16, Paul writes, "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of Him who is the head, that is, Christ. From Him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work." Jesus, as the Head, unites us as a body of diverse members, each with unique gifts and roles, but all working together for the common purpose of glorifying God and advancing His kingdom.

Our ultimate authority: He is the one to whom we are accountable. As the Head, Jesus has the right to set the direction for the church, to correct it when it strays, and to discipline it when necessary. Recognizing Jesus as our Head means submitting to His authority, not out of fear, but out of love and reverence for who He is.

Understanding and embracing is crucial for every believer: It shapes how we live our lives, how we relate to one another, and how we serve in the church. It reminds us that we are not independent entities, but members of a body, dependent on Jesus for our life, direction, unity, and authority.
