Encourages believers to recognize and embrace the limitless nature of God, and to live lives that reflect this understanding.
Good morning, beloved, I greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. It's a blessing to be gathered here in fellowship, in the house of our God, the One who is limitless in power, boundless in mercy, and unending in love.
Our sermon today is drawn from the book of Psalms, chapter 78, verse 41. It reads,
Yes, again and again they tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.
This verse, dear friends, is a mirror held up to our own lives, reflecting how often we, knowingly or unknowingly, place limitations on the limitless God.
We are going to look at three main points today. First, we will consider the notion of Harnessing the Unlimited Power of God. Second, we will reflect on Heeding God's Call for More. Lastly, we will turn our hearts towards Heralding the Boundless Blessings of Faith.
It's easy to forget, isn't it? How vast, how immense, how truly infinite our God is? We box Him into our understanding, our expectations, our desires. But, oh, how much more is He! How much more does He have for us!
The respected theologian J.I. Packer once wrote, "Once you become aware that the main business that you are here for is to know God, most of life's problems fall into place of their own accord." It is this awareness, this knowing, that we want to awaken within us today.
So, let's open our hearts, open our minds, and open our spirits to the limitless possibilities of an unlimited God. Let's not limit the Holy One of Israel, but rather, let's harness His power, heed His call and herald His blessings.
Let's pray.
Heavenly Father, we come before you today, humbled and grateful for the privilege of gathering in Your name. As we open Your Word, we ask that You open our hearts. Help us to see You as You truly are - limitless, boundless, and infinite. May we not limit You to our understanding but help us to trust in Your infinite wisdom and power. Teach us to harness Your power in our lives, to heed Your call for more, and to herald the blessings of faith. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Let's get started, shall we?
We find ourselves in a world that is often overwhelming, filled with challenges that seem insurmountable. We struggle, we strive, we strain against the weight of our problems, forgetting that we have access to a power that is greater than anything we could ever imagine. This power is not just any power, it is the power of God Himself.
God's power is not like human power: It is not limited by physical strength or intellectual prowess. It is not confined by the laws of nature or the boundaries of time and space. It is a power that created the universe, that parted the Red Sea, that raised Jesus from the dead. It is a power that is beyond our comprehension, beyond our wildest dreams. Yet, this power is not distant or detached. It is not reserved for the spiritual elite or the religiously righteous. It is available to each and every one of us, if we would only learn to harness it.
So, how do we harness this unlimited power of God?
Firstly: We must recognize that God's power is not something to be used for our own selfish purposes. It is not a tool to be wielded for personal gain or a weapon to be used against our enemies. It is a gift to be used for the glory of God and the good of others. This means that we must align our desires with God's desires, our will with His will. We must seek to do His will in all things, to live in a way that reflects His character and His love. This requires humility and surrender, a willingness to put aside our own plans and preferences in order to pursue God's purposes.
Secondly: We must cultivate a deep and intimate relationship with God. We cannot harness His power if we do not know Him. We must spend time in His presence, in prayer and in His Word. We must learn to listen to His voice, to discern His guidance, to trust in His promises. This is not a passive process. It requires effort and intentionality. It requires us to make God a priority, to seek Him first in all things. It requires us to be open and receptive, to be willing to be changed and transformed by His power.
Thirdly: We must exercise faith. Faith is not just a belief in God, it is a trust in His power. It is a confidence that He is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine. Faith is not a one-off event, but a daily decision. It is choosing to trust God in the midst of our circumstances, even when we cannot see the way forward. It is choosing to believe in His power, even when we feel weak and helpless.
Fourthly: We must be willing to step out in obedience. Harnessing God's power is not just about receiving, it is also about acting. It is about stepping out in faith, even when it is scary or uncomfortable. It is about doing what God has called us to do, even when it is difficult or daunting. Obedience is not always easy, but it is always rewarding. It is in obedience that we see God's power at work, that we experience His provision and His protection. It is in obedience that we grow in our faith and our relationship with God.
