This sermon encourages believers to pursue a deeper relationship with God, moving forward with purpose and perseverance, guided by His promise.

Introduction

Good morning, dear friends. It is a joy to stand here today, to share the word of God with you, and to dwell on the richness and depth of His wisdom. In this gathering, we are not merely individuals, but a community of believers, bound together by our shared faith and love for our Savior. We are here to encourage each other, to uplift each other, and to grow together in our understanding of God's word.

Opening Scripture Reading – Today, we turn our attention to the inspiring words of the apostle Paul in Philippians 3:13, "Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead." This potent verse invites us to reflect on the power of purpose, the perseverance needed in our faith, and the promise that lies ahead in our walk with God.

In the light of this scripture, I am reminded of the profound words of the respected Christian author, J.I. Packer, who once said, "There's a difference between knowing God and knowing about God. When you truly know God, you have energy to serve Him, boldness to share Him, and contentment in Him." This quote beautifully encapsulates the essence of our message today. As we strive to know God, not just know about Him, we are propelled forward with a passionate purpose, sustained by our faith, and guided by His promise.

Opening Prayer – Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we gather here today with open hearts and minds, eager to receive Your word. As we reflect on the teachings of Your servant Paul, we ask that You guide us, inspire us, and strengthen us. Help us to forget what lies behind, to press on with purpose and perseverance, and to be ever mindful of Your promise. May Your spirit be with us today and always. In Jesus' name, we pray, amen.

Today, dear friends, we are not merely reading words on a page. We are engaging with a living message, a divine calling, a beacon of hope. As we delve into the scripture, let us remember that these are not just Paul's words, but God's words, spoken through His faithful servant. Let us press forward, dear friends, with purpose, with perseverance, and with the promise of God ever before us. For in this, we find not only the path to spiritual growth but also the path to a deeper, more meaningful relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Pursuing Purpose Passionately

A. In this scripture, we find the first aspect of our teaching today. Paul's words are a reminder that our faith is dynamic. It's not about where we've been, but where we're going. It's about the pursuit, the striving, the pressing on. This is the essence of purpose. Purpose is not a destination, but a direction. It's not a place we arrive at, but a path we travel on.

When we embrace this truth, we begin to see our faith in a new light. Our faith becomes a journey of purpose, fueled by a passion for God. This passion is not a fleeting emotion, but a deep, enduring love for our Creator. It's a love that compels us to press on, to strive, to pursue.

B. The second aspect of our teaching today is found in the nature of this pursuit. Paul doesn't merely urge us to move forward, but to strain toward what is ahead. This is a call to perseverance. It's a call to press on, even when the path is steep, even when the journey is hard. It's a call to keep going, to keep striving, to keep pursuing.

Perseverance is not merely about endurance, but about determination. It's about having the courage to face challenges, the strength to overcome obstacles, and the resolve to keep moving forward. It's about pressing on, not because it's easy, but because it's worth it.

C. The third aspect of our teaching today is found in the promise that lies ahead. Paul's words remind us that our pursuit is not in vain. There is a promise that awaits us, a reward that lies ahead. This promise is not a mere possibility, but a certainty. It's not a hope, but a guarantee.

This promise is not just about the future, but about the present. It's about the peace that comes from knowing that our efforts are not in vain. It's about the joy that comes from knowing that our journey has a purpose. It's about the confidence that comes from knowing that our destination is secure.

D. The fourth and final aspect of our teaching today is found in the source of our purpose, passion, perseverance, and promise. Paul's words remind us that our pursuit is not self-driven, but God-inspired. Our purpose is not self-defined, but God-given. Our passion is not self-generated, but God-instilled. Our perseverance is not self-sustained, but God-supported. Our promise is not self-earned, but God-granted.

This truth is a reminder that our faith is not about us, but about God. It's not about our efforts, but about His grace. It's not about our strength, but about His power. It's not about our worthiness, but about His love.

We are not alone in our pursuit, but accompanied by a community of believers. We are not alone in our struggles, but supported by a God who loves us. We are not alone in our journey, but guided by a Savior who leads us. Let us press on, dear friends, with purpose, with passion, with perseverance, and with the promise of God ever before us. For in this, we find not only the path to spiritual growth, but also the path to a deeper, more meaningful relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
