DON’T QUIT- A SELF-EXAM

2 Corinthians 13:1-14

Introduction:

It has been a long time since I have been in School. From the time I started School until I finished my Bachelor’s Degree in College, I hate exams. If I had the choice to write a 100 page paper or take an exam, I would have written the paper. Coming from a family of teachers, I know that exams are necessary- They show what you know and what you do not know.

Life is full of tests- How you react to the many things that happen. The Christian life is also full of tests- How you live and react to spiritual challenges. As we conclude the Book of 2 Corinthians, Paul ends with warnings and encouragements. This morning, I am going to ask you a series of very important questions- A self-exam.

2 Corinthians 13:1-4

1. What is your attitude concerning sin?

Paul had already been to Corinth twice and was preparing for a 3rd visit. He had already warned them about their attitude about sin; and was letting them know that he was going to deal with them harshly at his next visit. There were many who were not changing their sinful living; and instead of changing, they said that Jesus was not really speaking through Paul. Jesus was crucified in weakness so that we can live in God’s power.

How do you deal with sin? When God convicts you of your sinfulness, do you change, or do you blame someone else? There are many who claim that I preach things that are hurtful and mean; and that this does not come from God. Many just want to shoot the messenger instead of changing. How about you?

2 Corinthians 13:5-6

2. Are you saved?

Each Christian should examine their life often. If you are living in a way that is not pleasing to God, you have either forgotten about the fact that God lives within you through the Holy Spirit, or you are not saved. Only you and God know if you are saved. Do you consider your salvation with fear and trembling? It is a dangerous thing to take your salvation lightly. Don’t play “Russian Roulette” with your salvation. Are you sure?

2 Corinthians 13:7-10

3. Do you desire to live a fully restored life in Jesus?

What does that mean? Christians are to live perfect lives- No sin. As soon as I said that, I saw many of you wince. You are probably thinking, “That is not possible”. Actually it is possible, we just choose not to do it. Thank God that we can confess our sins to God, and He forgives us of all unrighteousness. Not only are we not to sin; but we are to help one another. If your being weak means that others will be strong, then do it. Paul wanted to build them up and not tear them down- I pray to do the same.

2 Corinthians 13:11

4. Are you willing to work with other Christians?

Paul says that we need to rejoice, strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of 1 mind, and live in peace. This is how we are to live amongst one another.

Conclusion:

Paul ends this letter with a final greeting to the Corinthians.
