Doing the Work of an Evangelist

II Timothy 4:1-5

I. True Evangelism Reminds People of the Character of God

A. The Reminder that God Created and Owns Everything

1. God was in the beginning of the physical creation

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” – Gen. 1:1

2. As creator God owns everything

“The earth is the Lord’s and all it contains, the world, and those who dwell in it.” – Psalm 24:1

B. The reminder that God is perfectly holy

1. The Bible declares God’s perfection

“Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect” – Matthew 5:48

2. The Bible declares we are to follow His example as believers

“..Be holy for I AM holy…” – I Peter 1:15

C. The reminder that God requires perfect obedience to His law

“For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of them all.” – James 2:10

II. True Evangelism Reminds Man of His Nature

A. The reminder that we have broken God’s law

1. We have no cause for self-righteousness

“There is none righteous, no not one..” – Romans 3:10

2. We have no hope in being perfect

“”…all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” – Romans 3:23

B. The reminder that there is an eternal penalty for sin

“For the wages of sin is death…..” – Romans 6:23

C. The reminder that man cannot save himself by good works

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us…” – Titus 3:5

1. Our works will not stand alone – Isaiah 64:6

2. A works-based salvation defies God’s grace – Ephesians 2:8-9

III. True Evangelism Reminds People of the Nature of Christ

A. Christ came as both God and sinless man

“For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily..” – Col. 2:9

B. Christ was the demonstration of God’s love

1. Demonstrated in the death of Christ – Romans 5:8

2. Demonstrated in the judgment Christ endured – II Cor. 5:21

C. Christ delivered us completely through the resurrection

“And that He was buried and that he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures.” – I Cor. 15:4

IV. True Evangelism Reminds People of Their Need

A. We must declare the need for repentance

“Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord and he will have mercy on him, and to our God for He will abundantly pardon” – Isaiah 55:7

“If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his

cross and follow Me.” – Luke 9:23

B. We must declare the need for open confession of Christ

“If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord….” – Romans 10:9

1. Jesus always called people publicly

2. Public confession is commanded – Matt. 10:32 & Luke 12:8

C. We must declare the need for belief from the heart

“…and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved” – Romans 10:9
