Do you know this Jesus? HHM Pastor Jim Parisi 8-18-02

John 4:7-15 7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink." 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 9 Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ’Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water." 11 The woman said to Him, "Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? 12 Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?" 13 Jesus answered and said to her, "Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life." 15 The woman said to Him, "Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw."

Do you know this man Jesus?

Do you know this man who died on a cross, so that you may live forever?

Do we realize the Gift that is offered to us by His unselfish act?

Going through your daily act s of your life?

In John 4 we see Jesus sitting by the well as the others where looking to buy food

Funny thing about these wells they were meeting places

Woman drew water from the wells

Young men who would want to marry hung around the wells too.

Woman of certain reputations also frequented the wells too

He has an encounter with a woman of Samaria

This was highly unusual for a Jew to speak to a Samaritan

Samaria Central region, ancient Palestine. Extending for about 40 mi (65 km) north-south and 35 mi (56 km) east-west, it was bounded by Galilee, Judaea, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Jordan River.

Palestine of today and there is still a problem between the Jews and the Arabs their today

It was not the custom of the day to speak to her a Palestinian .

Not proper for a Jew to speak to such a woman this is why her response "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

It was about noon when she came to the well water was drawn 2 times a day

In the morning and evening when it was cool not at high noon in the heat of the day

It was an off time for a respectable woman

She was a woman considered of not so good a reputation

She came in the off hours….. not to be notice

The Samaritans were a mixed race

She was a sinful woman

This is why she is surprised Jesus is even talking to her

Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ’Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water."

He starts to speak to her about eternal life but she doesn’t understand

She wanted to know how he can draw from the well with no device

The well was deep

Isn’t the well the resource of god deep?

Eternal Life is a Gift but you have to ask for it

Eternal Life doesn’t need tools or rituals to be obtained

You cannot purchase this Gift from God.

It is freely given

Men are always trying to purchase the gifts of God

Simon the sorcerer was one in the book of acts chapter 8

Peter was laying hands on people to receive the Holy Spirit

Simon wanted the power and was willing to pay for it he offered them money. Money for a free gift

Ac 8:20 - But Peter said to him, "Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money!

You can not purchase the Gifts of God

You can not purchase your SALVATION

It doesn’t matter what station in life we hold or where our people hailed from

A true gift is one with no compensation being looked for in return

There are no strings attached

13 Jesus answered and said to her, "Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life."
