Summary: THIS SERMON EXPLORES THE FACT THAT WHEN WE VEIW GOD AS WE SHOULD, IT WILL KEEP US FROM SIN. WE NEED TO SEE OURSELVES AS GOD DOES. WE MUST VIEW SIN AS GOD DOES. WE MUST ALSO VIEW GOD AS HE IS. WHEN WE HAVE THE RIGHT VIEW OF GOD, FOLLOWING HIM WILL COME

DO YOU HAVE THE RIGHT VEIW OF GOD Psalms 51:1-12

Intro: Background on David’s sin with Bath-Sheba (2 Sam. 11)

The timing was when Nathan the prophet confronted him with his sin and then foretold of God’s judgment which was coming. (2 Sam.12)

We must first see ourselves as God does

We must next see our sin as God does

We must see our God as He is

I. GOD IS HOLY v.1-6

A. God sees all “my sin is ever before me” (v.3)

B. Sense God knows why don’t we “acknowledge” our sin (v.3)

C. “I aint hurt’n know body” (v.4) it hurts God

D. External obedience is not enough (v.6)

II. GOD IS POWERFUL v.7-8

A. David here confesses that only God could cleanse him (v. 7)

1. the “hyssop” (the blood) will make clean (Pentecost)

2. wash me and I shall be whiter than snow (only a saint)

3. only God can restore the sinner

4. And He can restore anyone who is willing

B. David confesses only God can give joy

1. the backslider has no joy

2. the lost has no joy

3. O, but the saint who walks in obedience, joy unspeakable

4. that’s the joy spoke of in (v.8b)

C. David believed God had the power to change him and cleans him

III. GOD WILL CHASTISE BELIEVERS FOR THEIR SINS v.8b

A. David, being a Shepard knew what must be done to wayward sheep

B. The Shepard would break one of the legs of that sheep

C. Then the Shepard would set the leg back to heal

D. While healing the Shepard would carry that sheep

E. After the leg healed that sheep would keep right be the Shepard’s side

F. God only breaks us so we want run away, and will stay close by Him.

IV. GOD IS A FORGIVING GOD v.9-12

A. Aren’t you glad God Forgives?

B. “hide thy face” implies that God don’t hold accountable, (not forgets) v.9

C. “Blot out all mine iniquities” (puppy’s mess blotted out of carpet)

1. You know you’ve made a mess of:

2. Let God clean it up you can’t anyway

D. We need to like David ask for a cleansed heart and a steadfast spirit.

E. (v.11) shows that David knew that danger of get a reprobate mind

F. Only through a close relationship with Christ can anyone have joy and an overflow of the Holy Spirit.
