Do What He Tells You To

Summary: WE are to obey the commands of Jesus
DO WHAT JESUS SAYS. John 2:1-5 and Matthew 5 and 6
John 2:1-5 2 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:
2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.
3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
KEY VERSE 5 WHASOEVER HE SAITH UNTO YOU DO IT.
This is the scripture, where Jesus is at a wedding, and they ran out of wine. Jesus then, turned the water into wine, but what I want us to get out of this text today is what Mary told the servants to do. She said, Whatever he tells you to do, do it.
This is great advice for us today. Do what Jesus tells us to do
There are many commands that Jesus tells us to do in the Bible, but let's just look at a few,
Jesus was teaching , on what we call the sermon on the mount.
let's look at a few things He commands us to do.
These things are found in Matthew 5, and 6.
1. THE FIRST THING IS FOUND IN MATTHEW 5:21-22 (ESV)
21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.
If we call our brother in Christ, a fool, we are in danger of hell fire. IF we are angry with our brother, we should go to that brother , and seek to have peace with him
2. THE SECOND THING WE SHOULD DO IS FOUND IN MATTHEW 5:27-28
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Jesus tells us, that if we look at a woman with lustful intend, that we have commited adultry with her in our heart
Jesus' teachings are difficult for us to follow, but that is what discipleship is. It means discipline ourselves.
3. THE THIRD THING WE SHOULD DO IS FOUND IN MATTHEW 5:38-39
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
Jesus is telling us to turn the other cheek. WE live in a world , where we say, "what goes around, comes around.
We want a chance to get even, don't we, but Jesus tells us to turn the other cheek if we are slapped.
Jesus' commands were so difficult , that many stopped following Him.
4. THE FOURTH THING JESUS TOLD US TO DO IS FOUND IN MATTHEW 5:40
40 And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic let him have your cloak as well.
Jesus is telling us , to paraphrase, that if someone sues us for our vest, give them our coat also.
5. THE FIFTH THING JESUS TELLS US TO DO IS FOUND IN MATTHEW 5:41
41 And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.
These are just a few of the things Jesus commands us to do.
Here are a few more.
LOVE YOUR ENEMIES
BLESS THEM THAT CURSE YOU
DO GOOD TO THEM THAT HATE YOU
PRAY FOR THEM THAT DESPITEFULLY USE YOU AND PERSECUTE YOU
IF YOU DON'T FORGIVE OTHERS, THEN YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER WONT FORGIVE YOU
DON'T LAY UP TREASURES ON EARTH, BUT INSTEAD, LAY THEM UP IN HEAVEN
YOU CAN'T SERVE TWO MASTERS
SEEK THE KINGDOM OF GOD FIRST, AND ALL THESE OTHER THINGS WILL BE GIVEN TO YOU.
BEWARE OF FALSE PROPHETS
These are just some of the commands that Jesus told us to do, that are found in Matthew 5 and 6.
There are many more. No one said it would be easy to follow Jesus, but it will be worth it.
