Explore the importance, characteristics, and benefits of developing a godly character, as it is who we are, not what we do, that truly defines us.

Introduction

Good morning, church family! We’re going to dive into some deep waters today, as we explore the subject of character, specifically godly character.

Now, before you start wondering what this is all about, let me remind you what Dwight L. Moody once said, "Character is what a man is in the dark." And who we are, my brothers and sisters, is determined by the kind of character we have.

Let's take a look at today's reference scripture from Colossians 3:12,

"Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience."

This verse serves as a blueprint for the kind of characteristics that make up a godly character.

So, today, we'll talk about the importance of developing a godly character, the characteristics of a godly character, and the benefits of developing a godly character. Now, don't just sit there thinking it's a lesson for someone else. This is for all of us, folks.

Let's start with a word of prayer.

Father, we thank You for this opportunity to gather and learn from Your word. Open our hearts and minds to understand and appreciate the importance of developing a godly character for the glory of Your name. Amen.

Ready to dive in? Let's get started!

The Importance

The importance of developing a godly character cannot be overstated. It is the essence of our Christian walk and the foundation upon which our faith is built. It is the embodiment of Christ in us, the hope of glory. When we talk about godly character, we are talking about a set of qualities and attributes that reflect the nature of God in us. It is the fruit of the Holy Spirit in our lives, as outlined in Galatians 5:22-23, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control."

A mandate: It’s the evidence of our transformation in Christ. As we grow in our relationship with God, our character should increasingly reflect His nature. This is the process of sanctification, which is the work of the Holy Spirit in us. It is a journey of transformation from our old sinful nature to a new creation in Christ.

The basis of our witness to the world: The world is watching us, and our character speaks louder than our words. It is through our actions, our reactions, and our interactions with others that the world sees Christ in us. When we exhibit godly character, we become living epistles, known and read by all men.

It determines our effectiveness in service: God uses people of character to accomplish His purposes on earth. When we have godly character, we become reliable and trustworthy vessels that God can use for His glory. We become channels of His love, grace, and mercy to a hurting world.

Our personal growth and maturity: It is through the challenges, trials, and tribulations of life that our character is tested and refined. As we persevere and remain steadfast in our faith, we develop qualities such as patience, endurance, and resilience. These are the hallmarks of a mature believer.

Our relationships: Whether it is in our families, in our workplaces, or in our communities, our character determines the quality of our relationships. When we have godly character, we are able to love unconditionally, forgive readily, and serve selflessly. We are able to build strong, healthy, and meaningful relationships that reflect the love of Christ.

It brings honor and glory to God: When we live lives that reflect the character of God, we bring honor to His name. We become a testament of His transforming power and His amazing grace. We become a living testimony of His goodness and faithfulness.

The Characteristics

The characteristics of a godly character are outlined in various parts of the Bible, but for our discussion today, we will focus on the five characteristics mentioned in Colossians 3:12 - compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience ... View this full PRO sermon free with PRO
