Summary: A look at the word "DELIVERANCE". This is mainly a compilation of scripture and definition, but very easy to preach from.

DELIVERANCE

Luke 4:18-19

18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

(KJV)

Deliverance seems to be a forgotten word in the church in America today.

We hear plenty of other words or sayings like, “they need to pray”, “they need victory”,

“they need joy”, “they need God to sanctify them wholly”.

When in reality what they need is to be delivered, they need deliverance.

Something has a hold on them and they need more than just to pray, but while they are praying they need for God to deliver them.

Deliverance is an awesome word. The very sound of it stirs the heart and mind. The meaning of it does so aswell.

Deliver in the OT Hebrew natsa means “to rescue, to deliver” It is used of physical rescue or physical deliverance. For example, in Exodus chapter 3, God says, verse 8, "I have come down to deliver Israel." That is to rescue them, to bring them out of that land, being Egypt, into a good and spacious land, being the land of Canaan.

Natsal is also used numerous times to speak of spiritual deliverance.

Ps 39:8

8 Deliver me from all my transgressions: …(KJV)

Ps 51:14

14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.

(KJV)

Ps 69:14

14 Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.

(KJV)

Ps 79:9

9 Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name: and deliver us, and purge away our sins, for thy name’s sake.

(KJV)

Another word for deliverance is palat, which means to escape, save, deliver, slip away

1. to bring into security, deliver

2. to cause to escape, cast forth

3. to be delivered

2 And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;

(KJV)

The LORD is he who causes my to escape, he brings my into security, he brings me to safety, he causes my to slip away, he delivers me!
