DECLARING JESUS' DESTINY—Luke 2:21-40

Luke showed his readers that Jesus’ destiny was openly revealed

Jesus’ destiny is openly declared.

How is Jesus’ destiny openly declared?

5 devices/events/loyalties/revelations/settings openly declaring Jesus’ destiny.

1—A device declaring Jesus’ destiny is...

CIRCUMCISION/Separation(:21)

Explanation:(:21) Setting apart & Naming

The events & prophecies of :21-39, regarding the child Jesus, took place prior to the arrival of the magi(Mat. 2).

:21—“And when eight days were completed for the circumcision of the Child, His name was called JESUS, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.”

Eight days following the birth of Mary’s first-born son(:7) & the shepherd’s visit(:8-20), & just prior to His circumcision, He was named ‘Jesus’. This was the Jewish custom as Abraham was instructed in Gen. 17:11-12, & prescribed for the nation in Lev. 12:3.

Gen. 17:9-12—“And God said to Abraham: “As for you, you shall keep My covenant, you & your descendants after you throughout their generations. This is My covenant which you shall keep, between Me & you & your descendants after you: Every male child among you shall be circumcised; & you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, & it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me & you. He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised, every male child in your generations, he who is born in your house or bought with money from any foreigner who is not your descendant.”

Lev. 12:2-3—““Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘If a woman has conceived, & borne a male child, then she shall be unclean seven days; as in the days of her customary impurity she shall be unclean. ‘And on the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.”

“Jesus” was the name which the angel(Gabriel) had separately required of....

1)Mary(prior to Jesus’ conception in her womb—1:31)

...& also...

2)Joseph(per a dream, after her pregnancy—Mat. 1:18-21).

Mat. 1:21—““And she will bring forth a Son, & you[Joseph] shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.””

Lk. 1:31-33—““And behold, you[Mary] will conceive in your womb & bring forth a Son, & shall call His name JESUS. He will be great, & will be called the Son of the Highest; & the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, & of His kingdom there will be no end.””

His name is very significant in that it alludes to the fact that He will save His people from their sins(Mat. 1:21).

“Jesus”—Ihsouv—"Jehovah is salvation"

“Circumcision”—peritemnw—1) To cut around; 2) To circumcise—2a) Cut off one's prepuce (used of that well known rite by which not only the male children of the Israelites, on the eighth day after birth, but subsequently also "proselytes of righteousness" were consecrated to Jehovah & introduced into the number of his people), 2b) To get one's self circumcised, present one's self to be circumcised, receive circumcision, 2c) Since by the rite of circumcision a man was separated from the unclean world & dedicated to God, the word is transferred to denote the extinguishing of lusts & the removal of sins.

“Conception”—sullambanw—1) To seize, take: one as prisoner; 2) To conceive, of a woman, 2a) metaph. of lust whose impulses a man indulges, 3) to seize for one's self, 3a) In a hostile sense, to make (one a permanent) prisoner; 4) To take hold together with one, to assist, help, to succor.

Argumentation:

Isa. 53:4-6, 11—“Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, & afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”.....“He shall see the labor of His soul, & be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities.”

Acts 4:12—“Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.””
