IV. TEXT:

1 Chronicles 20:2 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

When David arrived at Rabbah, he removed the crown from the king’s head, and it was placed on his own head. The crown was made of gold and set with gems, and he found that it weighed seventy-five pounds. David took a vast amount of plunder from the city.

1 Chronicles 21:1 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Satan rose up against Israel and caused David to take a census of the people of Israel.

G. Key verse:

1 Chronicles 17:11-14 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

For when you die and join your ancestors, I will raise up one of your descendants, one of your sons, and I will make his kingdom strong.

He is the one who will build a house—a temple—for me. And I will secure his throne forever.

I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will never take my favor from him as I took it from the one who ruled before you.

I will confirm him as king over my house and my kingdom for all time, and his throne will be secure forever.’”

VIII. MAIN BODY:

A. David knew GOD hates idolatry yet he used one of idol's materials.

"he removed the crown from the king’s head, and it was placed on his own head."

The king's name is Milcom or Molech, derived from an idol and King David used it for himself and not for GOD's kingdom, Israel though he knew full well that GOD hates idolatry. Milcom or Molech is the god of the Ammonites.

1 Kings 11:5 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Solomon worshiped Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians, and Molech, the detestable god of the Ammonites.

1 John 2:15 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you.

In this case, King David forgot GOD is with him and loved the world and the things of this world. David lived by the flesh not of faith.

1 John 5:4 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith.

B. Census with no offering

"Satan rose up against Israel and caused David to take a census of the people of Israel."

Exodus 30:12 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

“Whenever you take a census of the people of Israel, each man who is counted must pay a ransom for himself to the Lord. Then no plague will strike the people as you count them.

GOD motivates the census not the enemy because GOD created everything on this earth and therefore owns them. David, at this point, never followed the SPIRIT's leading in his life instead of the enemy's leading.

Numbers 1:2 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

“From the whole community of Israel, record the names of all the warriors by their clans and families. List all the men

Numbers 26:2 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

“From the whole community of Israel, record the names of all the warriors by their families. List all the men twenty years old or older who are able to go to war.”

Galatians 5:25 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.

If we give the devil a foothold, he will also go for the heart. Let us live therefore by the SPIRIT, and follow the SPIRIT's leading in our lives. Remember, David was attracted to the crown of an idolatrous king, and that's the foothold of the devil on him, he let the devil won.

Ephesians 4:27 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

for anger gives a foothold to the devil.

IX. CONCLUSION:

Let us live therefore by the SPIRIT, and follow the SPIRIT's leading in our lives.

Galatians 5:25 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.
