David's Divine Deliverance

Summary: The only deliverance our God promises is our soul's deliverance from death through faith in Jesus Christ. Bodily deliverance is not guaranteed....
David’s Divine Deliverance

Message Point: God can use a variety of circumstances to protect His own.
Focus Passage: I Samuel 19:8-24

Introduction: John Paton was a missionary in the New Hebrides Islands. One night hostile natives surrounded the mission station, intent on burning out the Patons and killing them. Paton and his wife prayed during that terror-filled night that God would deliver them. When daylight came they were amazed to see their attackers leave. A year later, the chief of the tribe was converted to Christ. Remembering what had happened, Paton asked the chief what had kept him from burning down the house and killing them. The chief replied in surprise, "Who were all those men with you there?" Paton knew no men were present--but the chief said he was afraid to attack because he had seen hundreds of big men in shining garments with drawn swords circling the mission station. Today in the Word, MBI, October, 1991, p. 18.
Last week, we saw how David was delivered by a friend who interceded on his behalf. Tonight, we are looking at a couple more times where David escaped the devices of King Saul.
I. Hand of Harm
a. Notice how Saul does not go out to fight, but is jealous when David is called a hero
b. David is doing what he is supposed to be doing – trying to soothe Saul’s irritated state
c. Saul’s rage tries to pin David to the wall with a spear – again.
II. Way of the Window
a. Michal helped David escape through a window
b. Michal loved David but didn’t appear to know God (for instance, the “household god”)
c. Michal deceived her father then lied about David
III. Saved by the Spirit
a. Saul’s men were overcome by the Spirit
b. Saul sent three groups of men, even when told what was going on
c. Finally, Saul, too, was overcome by the Spirit and David escaped
Invitation: It must be noted that God doesn’t ALWAYS physically deliver someone from harm (eg, Stephen, Paul, 1st Century saints). But when it comes to spiritual deliverance from death, God will always come through, when our faith is placed in Jesus.
