Psa. 51:1-19
1. DAVID'S CONDITION Notice the consequences of sin.
A. Sin Soils The Soul -Sin will make the soul feel dirty. v.2 "Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin"
Isa ch 64 v. 6 "But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away."
Note Our :-
(a) Pollution "But we are all as an unclean thing,"
(b) Poverty "and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags;"
(c) Powerlesness "and we all do fade as a leaf;"
(d) Pointlessness "and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away."
B. Sin Saturates The Mind - (Ill. David’s sin was always on his mind!)
v. 3 "For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me."
There was no :-
(a) Forgiving David's Sin
(b) Forgetting David's Sin
(c) Forgoing David's Sin
C. Sin Stings The Conscience - David was broken because he had hurt God! v. 4 " Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest."
Prodigal Luke Ch 15 v 21 " And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son."
D. Sin Saddens The Heart - (Ill. David has lost his joy and wants it back!) v. 12 " Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation;"
E. Sin Sickens The Body - (Ill. David’s sin has begun to take a physical toll on him.) v. 8 "Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice."
F. Sin Sours The Spirit - (Ill. David had a wrong spirit ) v. 10 " Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me."
G. Sin Seals The Lips - v. 13-15 v.13 "Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee."
Sin will take away your shout, your song and your service. You can shout - there’s no presence of God. You can’t sing - there’s no joy. You can’t testify - there’s no reality in your life.
II. DAVID'S CONFESSION v.1 "Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity , and cleanse me from my sin.3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me."
A Broken Spirit Confesses Sin - Because Of :-
God's Character - "Have mercy upon me, O God,
God's Covenant - "according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions"
God's Cleansing -"Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin"
A Broken Spirit Comprehends Sinfulness - Because it is -
1. transgressions, (evp), pesha, rebellion.
2. iniquity, (Nwe), avon, crooked dealing.
3. sin, (tajx), chattath, error and wandering. Adam Clarke.
We Made Our Mark - blot out my transgressions 1. transgressions-acts of rebellion, crossing over God's line.
We Mobilized Our Mistreatment - 2.Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity iniquity-inward crookedness.
We Missed God's Mark - 3. and my sin is ever before me."sin-missing the mark, failing to meet God's standard.
A Broken Spirit Concedes Submission -Because Of the :-
(a) Guiltiness Of Sin v.3 "For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me."
(b) Godlessness Of Sin v.4 " Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest."
Ver. 4. Against thee.
1. Thee, an holy God--a God of pure eyes, and that cannot endure to behold iniquity.
2. Thee, a just God--who will punish sin.
3. Thee, an Almighty God.
4. Thee, a gracious God. T. Horton.
(c) Grieviousness Of Sin v.5" Behold, I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me."
(d) Gravity Of Sin v.6" Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom."
It Robs Us Of God's Riches,God's Righteousness,& God's Reconciliation
3. DAVID'S CALL V.7 - 10 "7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
