THE MESSAGE
DAVID : A MAN AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART
**************************************
" ....After removing Saul, he made David their king. He testified concerning him: ’I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do. " Acts 13:22
1.COMMITMENT
I Samuel 17 : 34-36
David was a man of commitment to his responsibilities . When he was a humble shepherd boy taking care of the sheep , a lion and a bear came to kill the sheep. David risked his life to protect the sheep and tore apart the lion and the bear. He was faithful in the little things and God made him a ruler over much. We must learn from David to be faithful in the little responsibilities that God gives to us .Only then the Lord will give us greater responsibilities.
2.CALL
I Samuel 16 :6-13 Psalm 118:22-23
David was called and chosen by God. When Samuel went to the house of Jesse to anoint a king from among his sons , David was not even present there . Even his own father had no hopes for David . But God chose David to be the King over Israel even though his own family had rejected him . The stone which the builders rejected had become the chief cornerstone. We must not be discouraged when we are rejected by men because it is God who has chosen us and He will establish us in the calling He has given to us.
3.COURAGE
I Samuel 17 :45-47 , 23-24
David had courage to face Goliath . Even when all the soldiers fled from Goliath in fear , David was willing to face the challenge . He had great faith in God and a zeal for God . He wanted to bring glory to God by defeating the enemy who was mocking the God of Israel. God honored his courage and faith and delivered the enemy into his hand. We must have faith in God when we face the enemy . The Lord will honour our courage and zeal and grant us the victory.
4.CHASE
I Samuel 23 :14-15
David was chased by Saul who was pursuing David to kill him. David had to face suffering and danger inspite of doing great exploits for his nation. Instead of being honored by the king , he was hounded and had to flee for his life. David did not turn against God for allowing him to go through such trials in his life. He continued to cling to God to help him come out of these trials. We must not murmur against God when we face trials because of the attacks of the enemy against the call of God upon our lives. We must hold onto God until He delivers us from all our afflictions.
5.CONSCIENCE
I Samuel 24 :4-7 ,12
David had a tender conscience . When he had a opportunity to kill Saul he refused to touch God’s anointed . His conscience pricked him even for cutting a portion of Sauls’s robe . He let God judge between him and Saul . He did not want to lay his hand on the one whom God had anointed. We must not take the place of God and try to judge and avenge ourselves . We should be careful not to touch and harm God’s anointed by our words or actions . We must allow God to deal with His anointed when they go astray.
6.CORONATION
II Samuel 5:1-5
David experienced the fulfillment of God’s promise and was crowned as the King of Israel and Judah . Even though he was King only over Judah for the first seven and a half years , the people of Israel also accepted him as their king and he reigned in Jerusalem for 33 years over both Israel and Judah. Thus David experienced the fulfillment of the promise of God in his life which he received when he was anointed by Samuel . We must also be patient until we experience the fulfillment of God’s promise to us and go through the process that He leads us through until we reach our destiny.
7.CONTRITION
II Samuel 12 :13
David had a contrite and repentant heart. When he sinned against God , The Lord sent a prophet to make him realise his sin . When David realised his sin he acknowledged his transgression .He did not give excuses or try to justify his sins . He admitted that he had sinned against the Lord . The prophet then assured him of God’s forgiveness. Thus David obtained the grace and mercy of God in his life. The Lord did not reject the Psalms of David and included them in the Bible. And the Psalms of David are still a blessing to millions around the world even today . We must learn from David to admit our sins before God in order to obtain His grace and mercy in our lives . And then our lives will be a channel of blessing to others.
