I Samuel 17:20-30 David’s Battle Plan

1. David's Review Of The Battle

(a) In spite of his Father being Anxious.

20 And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.- David stayed with the Sheep until his father sent him

(b) In spite of his Family being Antagonistic.

28 And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle. Eliab was antagonistic to David

(c) In spite of the Forces being Afraid.

32 And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine. 33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.

Saul was also paralyzed with fear.

(d) In spite of his Foes being Angry.

10 And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.

1John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

2. David's Response To The Battle

29 And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?

I. BECAUSE OF OUR COUNTRY

A. Controlled by giants, of drugs, drink, depression, discouragement.

B. Conquered by Goliath. C. Compassed by the Philistines.

II. BECAUSE OF OUR COMMUNITY

A. Hopeless without Christ. B. Helpless without labourers to tell.

C. Headed for destruction.

III. BECAUSE OF OUR CHURCHES

A. The great falling away. B. The great forsaking C. The great famine:

No Preaching, No praying, No power.

D. The great folly—Ignoring the call of Christ.

F. The great finish— 1. Judgement seat, 2. White throne judgement.

IV. BECAUSE OF OUR CHILDREN

They need to know about :- A. the Praise of God. B. the Power of God.

V. BECAUSE OF CHRIST

A. His commandments ignored. B. His commission forsaken. C. His cause suffering.

D. His crucifixion scoffed. E. His coming denied.

3. David's Resolve In The Battle.

(a) His Battle Alignment: - His Humility in the face of Haughtiness.

40 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.

He did not come in the assurance of Saul’s armour. But in the name of the Lord.

(b) His Battle Attitude: - His Honesty in the light of Hostility

45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.

Tell the world with boldness that they are really resisting the living God

(c) His Battle Authority: - His Honour in the time of Humiliation

of the High & Holy God

45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.

David's Rest was in God, His Resolve was in God, His Reliance was in God,

His Resistence was in God, His Rejoicing was in God,

1 Cor 2:2For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified

4. David's Restoration Through The Battle.

46 This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.

Gen 15:18 In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

God gave all that land to Abraham, from the river Nile to the river Euphrates.
