Summary: We must have more than good looks, we must have substance.

Mat 21:17 And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there.

Mat 21:18 Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered.

Mat 21:19 And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away.

Mat 21:20 And when the disciples saw it, they marvelled, saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away!

Mat 21:21 Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.

Mat 21:22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

This tree was standing in the public road.

It was therefore common property and anyone might lawfully use its fruit. Mark says Mar_11:13, “Seeing a fig-tree afar off, having leaves, he came,”

Having leaves, and appearing healthy and luxuriant, they presumed that there would be fruit on it. Mark says Mar_11:13, “he came, if haply he might find anything thereon.” That is, judging from the “appearance” of the tree, it was “probable” that there would be fruit on it.

And found nothing thereon but leaves only - Mark Mar_11:13 gives as a reason for this that “the time of figs was not yet.” That is, the time “of gathering” the figs was not yet, or had not passed.

It was a time when figs were ripe or suitable to eat, or he would not have gone to it, expecting to find them;

Jesus was hungry and what should have fed him, became a beautiful obstacle

It had big green leaves , but it had no substance, looking good is not good enough

Going through motions is not the end of the journey

There is a place we must go in the spirit

Psa 50:12 If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.

Psa 50:13 Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?

Psa 50:14 Offer unto God thanksgiving; [ todaw sacrificial praise, hands outward in giving ]and pay thy vows unto the most High:

Psa 50:15 And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

Psa 50:16 But unto the wicked[rawah good for nothing, non fruitful]God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth?[Why u think u will receive]

Psa 50:17 Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee.

2Ch 7:13 If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people;

2Ch 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; [rawah good for nothing, non fruitful], then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

Gal 5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

No law to condemn or interfere or to constrain

Mar 11:20 And passing along early, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots.

Jer 17:7 Blessed is the man who trusts in Jehovah, and Jehovah is his refuge.

Jer 17:8 For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters. It sends out its roots by the stream, and it will not fear when the heat comes; but its foliage will be green; and it is not anxious in the year of drought, nor will it cease from yielding fruit.

Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is incurable; who can know it?

Jer 17:10 I, Jehovah, search the heart, I try the reins, even to give to each man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.

Mar 11:21 And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away.

Cursedst – to denounce to loathe to utterly hate to doom
