Summary: A Warning to the Church today.

“Consider Your Ways”

Text: Haggai 1:1-7

1 ¶ In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, saying,

2 Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the LORD’S house should be built.

3 Then came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,

4 Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste?

5 Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.

6 Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.

7 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.

Introduction:

Although this book of the Bible is classed as one of the minor prophets Haggai had a major message to proclaim. As we can see from our text he addressed a particular spiritual condition that prevailed among the people of God who had returned to Jerusalem after the 70 years of exile in Babylon. We find the Lord of host telling them to “Consider your ways”. They had drifted a long ways away from where they had once been. I feel that the church as a whole is in the same condition as God’s people were back then.

There are three areas of concern I want us to look at that I believe We need to consider our ways. The three areas are: (1) The State of Apathy, (2) The State of Selfishness, (3) The State of Worldliness. These are three dangerous states to be found in as the Church of God. So this morning I want us to “Consider Our Ways”.

1.The State of Apathy.

Apathy is having the lack of emotion. It is having the lack of interest; listless condition; unconcern.

Verse two show us the apathy of the Children of God. “Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the LORD’S house should be built.”

a. There is the lack of concern for church grow.

b. There is the lack of concern for church attendance.

c. There is the lack of concern for Spiritual grow.

d. There is the lack of enthusiasm for God and the Church.

2.The State of Selfishness.

There is pride in the heart that needs to be taken care of.

a. Pride of their Race.

b. Pride of their Face.

c. Pride of their Place.

d. Pride of their Grace.

Uncle Bud Robertson once said; “Pride is the only thing that makes everyone else sick but the one who has it.” How true that is.

3.The State of Worldliness.

Verse six shows us the the state of worldliness that the Children of God were in. “Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.”
