3. PURPOSE(:5)
4—Unsound Christian doctrine is confronted...
At Its DESIRE(:6-7)
Explanation: (:6-7)
:6—“from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to idle talk,
Timothy needs to recognize the critical potential of these false teachers of God’s truth. Therefore Paul reiterates that “some”—in their midst—have “strayed” from the overall purpose of God’s doctrine. These have “turned” to embrace “idle talk” preferring it over the truth(:5). It is easier for some to wax eloquently regarding the philosophies of humanity than it is for them to relate God’s truth. This is because it does not require sincere faith or love for God at all.
Again Paul mentions the “some” of their own number, as in :3, who would teach doctrine(s) foreign to God’s truth in Christ.
Ex.—My Dad’s disappointment with American Dental Assoc. meetings—They increasingly placed how to make more money above better dental care.
“Strayed/Swerved/Wandered”—astocew—To deviate from, miss the mark. Strong—To miss the mark, i.e. (figuratively) Deviate from truth. Used 3X.
“Turned aside”—ektrepw—1) To turn or twist out—1a) in a medical sense used Of dislocated limbs; 2) To turn off or aside; 3) To be turned aside; 4) To turn aside; 5) To turn away from, to shun a thing, to avoid meeting or associating with one. Strong—To deflect, i.e. Turn away (literally or figuratively). Used 5X.
“Idle talk/Vain jangling/Fruitless discussion/Meaningless talk”—mataiologia—N. f.—1) Vain talking, empty talk. Strong—Random talk, i.e. Babble. Used 1X.
From—mataiov—1) devoid of force, truth, success, result; 2) useless, of no purpose, empty—& —legw—To say, speak.
:7—“desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say nor the things which they affirm.”
These false teachers confidently affirm their own aberrant teachings which are derisive of Christianity, all the while claiming the truth/rightness of such teaching.
Their determination is to achieve recognition as those expert in Mosaic Law & its application but more than that they avail themselves of the pre-Talmudic(rabbinic discussions pertaining to Jewish law, ethics, philosophy, customs & history[200AD]-Wik.) oral law. These teacher ‘wannabes’ may be(or not) versed in or knowledgeable of the “law,” however they are fully ignorant of God’s truth from which the reasonings of men originally proceeded.
Not understanding what they themselves are saying, refers to the fact that such wannabes do not make the connections in their arguments which are necessary for a realistic & proper world view. Such connections are what separates a true teacher from a false one. If their affirmations are followed out to their logical conclusions, then their erroneous nature would be apparent. This is part of the effort of any man of God such as Timothy—to make determinations by God’s revealed word & will. The spirits of prophets must be subject to prophets...
1Cor. 14:32-33—“And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.”
Unfortunately we all know people who like to talk about things they really know nothing about. They want to be viewed authoritatively. To receive recognition & affirmation by others. This is bad enough when the subject is not spiritually charged—These become bad mechanics & pill pushing medical doctors & the like. But it is sad, pitiful & damning when such arrogance enters into the realm of vital spiritual matters. If their false doctrine is set free allowed by the Church, it leads others astray & into hell rather than into heaven.
