Compromising Power

1. Reminder of Jesus’ Power (12)

Jesus’ sword symbolizes war & salvation (Hebrews 4:12).

2. Realities of a Sinful City (13)

a. The church stayed true to Jesus.

b. The church stood strong against persecution.

3. Rebuke of a Compromising Church (14-15)

a. The church had accepted deceptive, false teachings (2 Peter 2:15, Jude 11).

b. The church had some practicing pagans “among” them (2 Corinthians 6:14-18).

i. Sacrificed food…

ii. Sexual immorality…

iii. Sinful indulgences…

c. These practices are a “stumbling block” to God’s people.

Toleration leads to compromise

and compromise leads to corruption.

4. Rewards of a Repentant Church (16-17)

a. Jesus will purify his Church if his people will not.

i. The Bible is the sword today (Ephesians 6:17).

ii. The Holy Spirit uses God’s Word (John 16:5-16).

b. Jesus will reward his overcomers.

Compromise has power because

it takes spiritual power from the church.
