Summary: The goal of Communion is to draw closer to Christ

Communion with Christ

October 3, 1999

Christ cares for our needs – He feeds our needs

A. We have a need for physical food

1.) This is basic means of survival

2.) We must have the basic needs for good health and strong life

3.) Without the basics of life we cannot focus properly on God

B. We have a need for spiritual food

1.) One of the reasons that we need to be in fellowship

2.) One of the reasons we celebrate the Lord’s Supper

Question - What is the deeper meaning of the Lord’s Supper?

Keys to Understanding the Lord’s Supper

I. Commemorate the death of Christ

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

A. Remember the reason for His death

B. Review the results of His ministry

II. Consecrate a personal Commitment to Christ

“That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” Romans 10:9-10

A. Receive the gift of His mercy

B. Respond to the blessing of His grace

C. Recommit yourself to His Lordship

III. Celebrate the new life in Christ

“So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone and the new has come!” 2 Corinthians 5:16-17

A. Renewed in the personal power of Christ

1. Christ will give you the power to get through any struggle

2. Christ will give you the power to reach your full potential in life

3. Christ will give you the power to achieve the impossible

B. Refreshed in the complete love of Christ

1. Christ loved you enough to die in your place

2. Christ loves you even when you reject His leading

3. Christ loves you enough to wait for your fellowship daily

4. Christ loves you enough to come and meet you where you are in life

C. Rejoice in total victory of Christ

1. Christ has defeated your greatest enemy – Death

2. Christ has solved your greatest problem – Sin

3. Christ has provided your greatest home – Heaven

YOU NEED JESUS!

Final Reflections

1. We come to Christ’s table for three reasons

A. Commemorate His death

B. Consecrate our commitment

C. Celebrate His victory

2. You must be ready to come to the table
