Summary: Commotion at Corinth
Acts 18 v 1 - 17 Commotion at Corinth
1. The Farewell
The Timing - 1 After these things
The Trusting - Paul departed from Athens,
The Testing - and came to Corinth;
2. The Fellowship -
With the Right People -
2 and found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus,
In the Right Place - lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla;
At the Right Period - because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome, and came unto them.
For the Right Purpose -
It was Personal - 3 And because he was of the same craft,
It was Practical - he abode with them, and wrought:
for by their occupation they were tentmakers.
It was Profitable - 4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.
3. The Feud - The
Company - 5 when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Compulsion - Paul was pressed in the spirit,
Compliance - and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ.
Complaint -
Their Folly - 6 And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed,
Their Fault - he shook his raiment, and said unto them,
Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean:
Their Failure - from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles.
4. The Faithful
The Place of Worship - 7 And he departed thence, and entered into a certain man’s house, named Justus, one that worshipped God,
whose house joined hard to the synagogue.
The Price of Worship - 8 And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized. (Faith and Obedience)
The Profit of Worship -
The Voice - 9 Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night
The Vision - by a vision,
The Victory - Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace:
The Validation - He Speaks of -
The Presence of God - 10 for I am with thee,
The Power of God - and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee:
The Providence of God - for I have much people in this city.
The Verification - 11 And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.
5. The Fight -
The Time - 12 And when Gallio was the deputy of Achaia
The Test - the Jews made insurrection with one accord against Paul,
The Trial - and brought him to the judgment seat,
The Tale - 13 saying, This fellow persuadeth men to worship God contrary to the law.
6. The Failure -
The Intervention - 14 And when Paul was now about to open his mouth, Gallio said unto the Jews,
The Instruction - If it were a matter of wrong or wicked lewdness,
O ye Jews, reason would that I should bear with you:
The Admonition - 15 but if it be a question of words and names,
and of your law, look ye to it; for I will be no judge of such matters.
The Rejection - 16 And he drave them from the judgment seat.
The Retribution - 17 Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the chief ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat.
And Gallio cared for none of those things.
7. The Fruit -
The Possible Reclamation - 1 Corinthians 1
1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, 2 unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours: 3 grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
