I. Why did the HS make Himself known in this way? Why doesn’t He do that today?
A. He wanted to make it obvious that what Jesus said had come true.
B. He wanted to make himself obvious to unbelievers.
1. Luke 16 the rich man and Lazarus
2. If they won’t hear the prophets neither, will they hear someone from the dead.
C. Today we have the indwelling of the HS and the testimony of the Apostles.
D. How does God make Himself known to us today?
1. Through His people.
2. The gospel
3. The indwelling of the HS
4. The actions of God in our lives
II. Why the sound of a mighty rushing wind?
A. We need to picture this event.
B . In a room just large enough to house 120 people
C. Overwhelmed by the sounds and the sights of the entrance of the HS
D. Very similar to I Kings 19:11-12
E. This created a pattern of God to show Himself to His people.
III. What did the tongues of fire represent?
A. Fire is often used to represent God’s activities.
B. The burning bush
C. The fire in I Kings 19
D. In Revelation Jesus’ eyes as flames of fire.
E. Fire is thrown on the earth as part of the Judgement of God.
F. It is a fulfillment of Jesus prophecy in Matthew 3:11
IV. Why did this happen on the day of Pentecost?
A. There would be a great gathering of Jews.
B. Pentecost is about repentance of the law.
V. Who heard these wonderful works of God?
A. These were likely Jews that were part of the aspersion.
B. They had come from all over for the celebration of Pentecost.
1. This was probably the most widely celebrated of all the feasts of the Jews.
2. This event sent many away back to their hometowns to assist in the spread of the gospel.
3. Before we can do that, you have to have seen, heard, experienced, have to memory these wonderful works of God.
4. If we do nothing but sit and read, we do not experience God for ourselves
5. We then are never motivated to share because we have not experienced Him.
6. The disciples did and couldn’t wait to share Him.
7. The woman at the well did and couldn’t wait to share Him.
8. If your desire to share Him is weak then go serve Him in the world
9. The disciples didn’t just go to service
10. They served Him in the world and saw Him work.
11. They had something to share, and they had something to shout about.
VI. What are the wonderful works of God?
A. The many miracles by Jesus.
B. John 21:25 tells us that there were many other things done not recorded
C. The death, burial, resurrection of Jesus.
D. How He showed Himself for 40 days.
E. His ascension.
F. His promise to come back.
Conclusion:
Our Mission, as a church, is to share the wonderful works of God!
