Summary: Funeral Sermon for a believer
A COMFORTING PROMISE TO THE FAMILY
JOHN 11:25-26
TEXT: “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?’”
I. THE SITUATION
A. Jesus just arrived to find that his good friend Lazarus had died. He met
with Lazarus’ sisters and those mourning the loss of this person and He was
troubled in His spirit and wept.
B. Jesus said these words to Martha, a grieving sister, to comfort her.
II. THE PROMISE GIVEN TO THE FAMILY
A. Jesus declares that He is the “resurrection and the life.” Jesus said these
words because they meant something very important to those who were
missing their loved one.
B. Jesus also declares “whoever believes in me will never die.”
1) This means that to be gone from this life does not mean that our
life has ended. Life is much more that what we experience here on
Earth. For the Christian believer, when this life is over, there is an
abundant Heavenly life after.
2) Jesus also means that when we die, we gain Him. He is waiting
for us and has prepared a place in Heaven where there are no tears or
pain or anguish.
III. THE COMFORT GIVEN TO US
A. Take comfort that life after this life has been taken care of by the
Almighty God.
B. Take comfort that even though we will miss him/her we will see them
again when we arrive and Jesus greets us.
C. Take comfort that he/she is in the arms of our Loving God.
