Clothe Yourselves with Humility

January 12, 2025

1 Peter 5:5-6 NIV

In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.

When Peter wrote this, slaves were required to wear certain garments that identified them as slaves.

Remember the old country song: It’s Hard to Be Humble? By Mac Davis

Oh Lord it's hard to be humble

when you're perfect in every way.

I can't wait to look in the mirror

'cos I get better looking each day

to know me is to love me

Luke 14:7-11 NIV

“When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable: 8 "When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. 9 If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, 'Give this man your seat.' Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. 10 But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, 'Friend, move up to a better place.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all your fellow guests. 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

v.7 – “When he noticed how the guests picked the places …”

Humility is allowing God to pick your seat.

God is not a formula to figure out. He’s a God who can be trusted.

Isaiah 50:10-11 NIV

“Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the word of his servant? Let him who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God. 11 But now, all you who light fires and provide yourselves with flaming torches, go, walk in the light of your fires and of the torches you have set ablaze. This is what you shall receive from my hand: You will lie down in torment.”

v.8 – “to a wedding feast”

Humility is pushing others to the front of the line.

Humility means you want as many people as possible to enjoy the feast with you.

v. 11 – “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

Humility is not thinking less about ourselves. It is thinking about ourselves less.

Humility is serving with right motives.

The outward appearance of humility is not what God is after.

Philippians 2:5-11 NIV

“Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death — even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
