Claiming What God Has Given You

Duetronomy 1:1-8

1 These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red sea, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab.

2 (There are eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadeshbarnea.)

3 And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the LORD had given him in commandment unto them;

4 After he had slain Sihon the king of the Amorites, which dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Astaroth in Edrei:

5 On this side Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law, saying,

6 The LORD our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount:

7 Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the south, and by the sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, and unto Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates.

8 Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them.

Deuteronomy 1:1-8 is a message that Moses gave to Israel shortly before the great law giver died and shortly before Israel went into the Promised Land.

Deuteronomy 1:3

3 And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the LORD had given him in commandment unto them;

This was going to be Moses’ last Word to Israel; the time of these words would be approximately a month previous to his death.

The theme of this message is that possession of Canaan was dependent upon the keeping of the law given at Sinai.

Sinai was one of the peaks of a mountain mass named Horab.

According to Deuteronomy 29:29 the secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

When God reveals something to us, then it is time to claim it because if we are obedient to Jesus and what He says to do then it is ours.

Some might say that is Old Testament but Jesus said in John 3:36 "He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."

Jesus didn’t come to do away with the Law but to fulfill it.

Deuteronomy 1:4

4 After he had slain Sihon the king of the Amorites, which dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Astaroth in Edrei:

By the destruction of these Kings, who sought to bar the access of the Israelites to the Promised Land, God had given proof that He would indeed fulfill His promise to His people.

Deuteronomy 1:5

5 On this side Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law, saying,

As long as the people did what God wanted them to do, God would take care of them no matter where their wonderings would take them.

If they would be unfaithful, there would be nothing but misery.

A lesson in this Book is the impossibility of the natural man taking hold upon and keeping Divine privileges.

Deuteronomy 1:6

De 1:6 The LORD our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount:

The phrase, “Lord our God,” implies the Covenant union of Israel with Jehovah, and presupposes the existence of that Covenant, which was entered into at Sinai.

Deuteronomy 1:7-8

7 Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the south, and by the sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, and unto Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates.

8 Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them.

This description encompasses the whole of the Promised Land.

It included all of modern Jordon, Syria and even Iraq, at least as far as the Euphrates River.
