Dear Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ, born in a humble manger, announced to humble shepherds. We thank You for the hope, the peace, the glory that His birth brings to our ruined humanity. Today, we will be reflecting on three main points from this passage: The Heavenly Birth, Joyous Celebration, and The Message of Christmas. Let us open our hearts and minds to receive the richness of God's Word.
As we reflect on the passage from Luke, we find ourselves in the midst of a humble field, under the vast expanse of the night sky. The shepherds, simple men of the earth, are tending to their flocks. Their lives are simple, their hearts pure. It is to these men that the first announcement of the birth of our Savior is made. The setting itself is a testament to the nature of God's love - humble, pure, and accessible to all.
In the quiet stillness of that night, the ordinary is touched by the extraordinary. The glory of the Lord shines around the shepherds, enveloping them in divine light. The angel of the Lord appears to them, bringing the good news of the birth of the Messiah. This is not a birth in a grand palace, nor is it announced to kings and rulers. It is a birth in a humble stable, announced to humble shepherds. They simply believe and act. This is a powerful lesson for us. God's word is trustworthy and true. When we hear it, our response should be one of faith and obedience.
The shepherds find the baby just as the angel had told them. They see with their own eyes the truth of the angel's message. They see the baby, wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. They see the Savior, the Messiah, the Lord. Their hearts are filled with awe and wonder. They cannot help but spread the word about what they have seen and heard. Their witness is a powerful testimony to the truth of the heavenly birth.
Transition. As we reflect on the heavenly birth, let us be reminded of the humility, the simplicity, the faith, and the obedience that it embodies. Let us be inspired by the shepherds' response to the angel's message. Let us strive to live our lives with the same faith and obedience.
