Christ Alone

The Five Solas of the Reformation:

1. Scripture alone is our highest authority.

2. Saved by the Grace of God alone.

3. Saved through Faith alone in Christ.

4. Christ alone is our Lord, Savior and King.

5. We live for the Glory of God alone.

Colossians 1:15–20 Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16For everything was created by Him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17He is before all things, and by Him all things hold together. 18He is also the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He might come to have first place in everything. 19For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, 20and through Him to reconcile everything to Himself by making peace through the blood of His cross—whether things on earth or things in heaven. (HCSB)

I. Who Jesus is?

A. Jesus is fully God and fully man.

1. “Image of the invisible God” v 15

2. Jesus came in the Flesh.

Philippians 2:5–8 Make your own attitude that of Christ Jesus, 6who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be used for His own advantage. 7Instead He emptied Himself by assuming the form of a slave, taking on the likeness of men. And when He had come as a man in His external form, 8He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death—even to death on a cross. (HCSB)

3. Jesus is God v 19

John 1:1–3 In the beginning was the Word [Jesus], and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were created through Him, and apart from Him not one thing was created that has been created. (HCSB)

Why is Jesus 100% God and 100% man?

Who sinned? Man. Man SHOULD pay for our sin.

Only God COULD pay for our sin

B. Jesus is central.

1. “firstborn” doesn’t mean “born first.” v 15

2. Jesus is “over all creation.” v 15

3. Jesus is “before all things.” v 17

C. Jesus is the Creator. v 16

1. He created everything. v 16

2. “all things have been created through Him.” v 16

II. What Jesus does.

A. Jesus creates. v 16

1. All Things v 16

2. All People—My Friend Jason

3. Jesus recreates.

2 Cor. 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. (ESV)

Ps 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. (ESV)

B. Jesus rules. v 16–20

1. All creation exits for Jesus’ Pleasure.

2. Jesus: “by Him all things hold together.” v 17

3. Jesus is the head of the Church v 18

Eph. 1:20–22 He demonstrated this power in the Messiah by raising Him from the dead and seating Him at His right hand in the heavens—far above every ruler and authority, power and dominion, and every title given, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And He put everything under His feet and appointed Him as head over everything for the church. (HCSB)

C. Jesus saves. v 20

1. He made “peace through His cross.” v 20

2. The Cross proves:

a. God is Holy. Sin must be punished

b. Man is sinful. If we are not why did Jesus have to die?

Hell is full of people who think they deserve heaven. Heaven is full of people who know they deserve hell.

c. We cannot save ourselves.

d. Jesus is the ONLY way.

John 14:6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. (HCSB)

Application:

1. Do you know Jesus?

2. Does Jesus know you?

Matthew 7:21–23 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord!’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22On that day many will say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in Your name, drive out demons in Your name, and do many miracles in Your name?’ 23Then I will announce to them, ‘I never knew you! Depart from Me, you lawbreakers!’
