CHARACTER STUDY OF LUKE – PHYSICIAN AND AUTHOR OF LUKE AND ACTS

INTRODUCTION

Luke was a physician, historian, and companion of Paul who authored the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. His writings provide a detailed account of Christ’s life and the early church. Though he was not one of the twelve apostles, he played a crucial role in documenting the life and ministry of Jesus and the spread of the gospel. His life teaches us about diligence, faithfulness, and the power of using one's profession for God's kingdom.

1. LUKE AS A FAITHFUL COMPANION OF PAUL

a) He journeyed with Paul on missionary trips (Acts 16:10-12)

Luke was present in many of Paul’s travels, documenting their experiences.

b) He remained with Paul during difficult times (2 Timothy 4:11)

When others abandoned Paul, Luke stayed by his side.

c) He was a trusted friend (Colossians 4:14)

Paul referred to him as "our dear friend," showing their close relationship.

d) He was a fellow worker in the gospel (Philemon 1:24)

Luke was not just a writer but an active minister of the Word.

e) Biblical Example: Elisha following Elijah (2 Kings 2:1-14)

Like Elisha, Luke remained faithful to Paul in ministry.

2. LUKE AS A PHYSICIAN AND EDUCATED MAN

a) He was a medical doctor (Colossians 4:14)

Paul identified Luke as "the beloved physician," showing his profession.

b) He used his knowledge for God’s work (Luke 1:1-4)

Luke carefully researched and documented Christ’s life.

c) He wrote with a historian’s accuracy (Acts 1:1-3)

His detailed accounts provide historical and spiritual insight.

d) He combined faith with intellect (Luke 24:25-27)

Luke balanced scientific knowledge with strong faith in Jesus.

e) Biblical Example: Daniel’s wisdom and knowledge (Daniel 1:17)

Like Daniel, Luke used his intellectual abilities for God’s kingdom.

3. LUKE AS THE AUTHOR OF LUKE AND ACTS

a) He wrote an orderly account of Jesus’ life (Luke 1:3-4)

Luke’s Gospel is structured with great attention to detail.

b) He provided historical accuracy (Acts 1:1-3)

Acts gives a reliable record of the early church and the Holy Spirit’s work.

c) He emphasised Jesus as the Saviour for all (Luke 2:10-11)

Luke highlighted salvation for both Jews and Gentiles.

d) He recorded the work of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-4)

Acts focuses on the power of the Holy Spirit in the church.

e) Biblical Example: Moses writing the Law (Exodus 24:4)

Like Moses, Luke documented God's works for future generations.

4. LUKE’S CHARACTER AND QUALITIES

a) He was diligent and detail-oriented (Luke 1:1-4)

Luke took great care in his research and writing.

b) He was humble (Acts 16:10)

Luke rarely mentioned himself, showing his humility.

c) He was compassionate (Luke 10:33-35)

His Gospel highlights Jesus’ care for the sick and needy.

d) He was loyal and steadfast (2 Timothy 4:11)

Luke remained with Paul until the end of his life.

e) Biblical Example: Nehemiah’s diligence (Nehemiah 2:1-5)

Like Nehemiah, Luke was dedicated to his God-given mission.

STRENGTHS OF LUKE

a) He was a great historian (Luke 1:3)

His writings provide historical accuracy and deep spiritual insight.

b) He was faithful in friendship (2 Timothy 4:11)

Luke remained with Paul when others left.

c) He was educated but humble (Colossians 4:14)

Despite being a doctor, he served humbly.

d) He was committed to spreading the gospel (Acts 1:1-3)

His writings helped establish Christian doctrine.

e) He was Spirit-led in his work (Acts 16:10)

His writings show a deep understanding of the Holy Spirit’s role.

WEAKNESSES OF LUKE

a) He was not an eyewitness to Jesus' ministry (Luke 1:2)

He relied on eyewitness accounts for his Gospel.

b) He was often in the background (Acts 16:10-17)

Unlike Paul and Peter, he played a supportive role rather than a leadership one.

c) He was heavily dependent on Paul’s ministry (2 Timothy 4:11)

Most of his work was linked to Paul’s mission.

d) He faced dangers in travel and ministry (Acts 27:1-44)

Luke endured hardships alongside Paul.

e) Biblical Example: John Mark needing encouragement (Acts 15:37-39)

Like John Mark, Luke may have struggled with challenges in ministry.

LESSONS TO LEARN FROM LUKE

a) Use your skills and profession for God’s kingdom (Colossians 4:14)

Luke’s medical knowledge did not stop him from serving God.

Luke’s loyalty to Paul is a model of true friendship.
