Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
Explores the nearness of God, the importance of sincere prayer, and the transformative power of experiencing God's truth in our lives.
Good morning, dear family of faith. As we gather together in this sacred place, we find ourselves in the presence of an extraordinary truth. An everlasting truth, that our God is near to us, that He hears us, and that He answers us. He is not a distant deity, a far-off figure shrouded in the mists of the heavens. No, He is near. He is here. He is with us.
In the words of the great Charles Spurgeon, "Prayer is the slender nerve that moves the muscle of omnipotence." Our prayers, our calls to God, they are not just words flung into the void. They are the language of our hearts, reaching out to a God who is closer than our next breath. Our God is not a God of distance and detachment, but a God of nearness and intimacy.
Let us turn to the Scripture for today, Psalm 145:18,
"The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth."
What a profound declaration! The Lord is near to all who call on Him. But not just call on Him casually or carelessly. No, to all who call on Him in truth. In honesty. In sincerity. In authenticity.
Our sermon today is a celebration of this nearness, a recognition of the honesty required in our call to God, and the truth we harvest through His presence. We will not just read about this, we will not just hear about this, but we will experience it. We will feel it. We will know it.
So, as we prepare our hearts and minds for the Word of God, let us bow our heads in prayer.
Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for your nearness. We thank you for the privilege of prayer, for the opportunity to call on you in truth. We ask that you would open our hearts and minds to your Word today. Help us to understand it, to internalize it, to live it. May we be drawn closer to you, and may our lives be a testament to your truth. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Let us now proceed, dear friends, not as spectators, but as participants. For we are not here to merely observe the truth, but to be transformed by it.
In the sacred text, we find an invitation. An invitation to call on the Lord. To reach out to Him. To speak to Him. But this is not a call into the void. It's not a message sent into the ether, hoping for a response. No, it's a call to a God who is near. A God who is present. A God who is with us.
This nearness is not a physical proximity: It's not about God being in the next room or the next town. It's a spiritual closeness. A closeness of the heart. A closeness of the soul. It's about God being with us in our joys and our sorrows, our triumphs and our trials, our hopes and our fears. But this nearness is not automatic. It's not a given. It's not a default setting. It requires something from us. It requires a call. A call in truth. A call in honesty. A call in sincerity.
This call is not a casual conversation: It's not a careless chat. It's not a one-sided monologue. It's a heartfelt dialogue. It's a sincere communion. It's an authentic connection. It's about speaking our truth to God, and listening for His truth in return.
What does it mean to call on God in truth?: It means to call on Him with all our heart. To call on Him with all our soul. To call on Him with all our mind. To call on Him with all our strength. It means to call on Him with everything we have and everything we are. This call is not about saying the right words. It's not about following a script. It's not about ticking a box. It's about speaking from the heart. It's about expressing our deepest desires, our greatest fears, our highest hopes. It's about being real with God.
This call is not just about us: It's not just about our needs, our wants, our wishes. It's about God. It's about His will, His way, His word. It's about aligning our hearts with His. It's about seeking His kingdom first. It's about living for His glory.
This call is not a one-time event: It's not a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It's a daily discipline. It's a constant conversation. It's an ongoing relationship. It's about walking with God, talking with God, living with God. It's about being in His presence, in His peace, in His power. This nearness, this call, this truth, it's all part of our relationship with God. It's all part of our walk with Him. It's all part of our faith in Him. It's not about religion. It's about relationship. It's not about rules. It's about relationship. It's not about rituals. It's about relationship.
