And so, as we turn our attention to Hebrews 11, we are invited to reckon thoughtfully and confidently upon the trustworthiness of our God, to recognize the faith that has come before us, and to find the courage to carry that faith forward.

Let us bow our heads in prayer. Heavenly Father, we thank You for the privilege of gathering here today in Your name. We thank You for Your Word, which is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Firstly, we see that their faith was grounded in the Word of God. They didn't just have a vague belief in a higher power. They trusted in the specific promises of God as revealed in His Word. They took God at His word and acted on it. This is a crucial aspect of fostering faith. We need to immerse ourselves in the Word of God, meditate on His promises, and let them shape our thoughts and actions.

Secondly, their faith was part of a community of faith. They encouraged and supported one another and held each other accountable. This is another vital aspect of fostering faith. We need to be part of a community of believers, to share our struggles and victories, to pray for one another, and to spur one another on towards love and good deeds.

Next, their faith was tested and refined through trials. They faced hardships, persecution, and even death. But these trials didn't weaken their faith. On the contrary, they strengthened it. They learned to rely more fully on God, and to trust Him even while suffering. This is a challenging but essential aspect of fostering faith. We need to see trials not as obstacles to faith but as opportunities for growth. We need to let our faith be tested and refined so that it becomes stronger and more resilient.

Lastly, their faith was forward-looking. They were looking forward to the fulfillment of God's promises, to the heavenly city that God has prepared for them. This forward-looking faith gave them hope and perseverance. It enabled them to endure hardships and to keep going even when the going got tough. This is a key aspect of fostering faith. We need to keep our eyes on the prize, to look forward to the eternal reward that awaits us.
