INTRODUCTION:
A legacy is what remains of you when you are no longer physically present. It is not just about the wealth you leave behind, but the values, faith, and spiritual impact that continue to live on in others. As believers, we are not called to just pass through this life—we are called to leave behind a godly footprint that points generations to God.
Every generation has the responsibility to pass the baton of faith to the next. True success in life is measured not by possessions or popularity but by the legacy of righteousness, truth, and spiritual influence you establish. Building a godly legacy doesn’t happen by accident—it must be intentional, prayerful, and rooted in obedience to God.
This sermon challenges us to live in such a way that long after we are gone, our walk with God will still speak and inspire others to love and serve the Lord.
1. A GODLY LEGACY STARTS WITH A GODLY LIFE
To build a legacy that honours God, you must live a life that honours Him daily.
a) Live by God’s Word (Psalm 119:105)
Your daily choices and values must be shaped by Scripture, not the culture.
b) Walk in Integrity and Truth (Proverbs 20:7)
Your character is one of the strongest tools in shaping those who follow you.
c) Model a Life of Faith and Prayer (James 5:16)
Let your devotion to God be evident and inspiring to others.
d) Live with Eternity in View (Colossians 3:1-2)
Don’t just live for success—live for significance in God’s kingdom.
Biblical Example: Enoch walked with God and left behind a testimony of intimate fellowship (Genesis 5:24).
2. INVEST IN THE NEXT GENERATION INTENTIONALLY
Legacy is not built in isolation—it is transferred through mentoring and example.
a) Teach God’s Word to Your Children (Deuteronomy 6:6-9)
Your home should be a centre for spiritual formation.
b) Speak Words that Impart Life and Vision (Proverbs 18:21)
Use your words to shape destinies, not destroy them.
c) Encourage God-given Purpose Early (Jeremiah 1:5)
Help children and spiritual sons and daughters discover and walk in purpose.
d) Be a Mentor and Spiritual Covering (2 Timothy 2:2)
Raise others who will continue the faith and expand the kingdom.
Biblical Example: Lois and Eunice passed genuine faith to Timothy, who became a pillar in the early Church.
3. BUILD A LEGACY OF GENERATIONAL BLESSING
What you do today will affect generations yet unborn—build wisely.
a) Obedience to God Secures Generational Blessing (Genesis 22:16-18)
God blesses generations because of one man’s obedience.
b) Live a Life that Inspires Faith in Others (Hebrews 11:4)
Like Abel, your life can speak even after you are gone.
c) Store Up Spiritual Inheritance, Not Just Material (Matthew 6:19-20)
Invest in souls, the Word, and the things of the Spirit.
d) Be Faithful with What God Entrusted to You (1 Corinthians 4:2)
Your faithfulness is your seed for future generations.
Biblical Example: Abraham’s covenant with God blessed all his descendants, including you and me.
4. A GODLY LEGACY LIVES ON AFTER YOU ARE GONE
Even in death, your influence should continue to point others to God.
a) Leave Behind Godly Principles and Instructions (Proverbs 4:1-5)
What you teach now can preserve someone’s life later.
b) Build a Testimony of Faith Others Can Imitate (Hebrews 13:7)
People follow your example more than your advice.
c) Let Your Legacy Glorify God, Not Self (Matthew 5:16)
Your story must always point back to Jesus, not your achievements.
d) Prepare Others to Continue What You’ve Started (2 Kings 2:9-15)
Raise sons and daughters who will carry your spiritual mantle.
Biblical Example: Elisha carried on the prophetic mantle of Elijah and even surpassed his miracles.
CONCLUSION:
Building a godly legacy is not about living a perfect life but a purposeful one. It’s about sowing seeds of righteousness, truth, and faith that will bear fruit for generations to come. The legacy you leave behind is the proof of the life you lived. Make your life count—not just for now, but for eternity.
Today, make a fresh commitment to live intentionally and invest spiritually in others. Let your name be associated not only with success but with significance in the kingdom of God.
