Brokenness
Contributed by Dan Brown on Dec 4, 2006 (message contributor)
Summary: Brokenness is daily coming to God and admitting our weakness and our need for Him.
Sermon-9/23/01-Lk. 15-Brokenness
KI: Brokenness is daily coming to God and admitting our weakness and our need for Him.
Read Lk. 15-Prodigal son from the Message.
Every time I turned around this summer hearing this story, Hume, SEMP
Path of Theb Roken-Brokenness
Came to understand brokenness in a new way.
Not a one time event in our lives. A path, a lifestyle of brokenness, daily coming to God and admitting our weakness, our need for Him.
This morning what it takes to walk the path of the broken.
Realize 3 things
1. The Christian life is simple-not easy, not problem free, but it is simple
II Cor. 11:3-don’t be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ.
Lk. 18:17– a simple, childlike faith “Anyone who doesn’t have their kind of faith” “receive the kingdom of God like a little child”
Not a God of confusion,
Col. 2:6 “Just as you accepted Christ as Lord, so walk in Him.”- Simple
The Christian Life is Impossible
You can’t live it on your own and God never intended for you to. That’s what makes it so simple.
Jn. 15:5- “apart from me you can do nothing”
Even Jesus said He couldn’t live the life He was called to apart from total reliance on God
Jn. 5:19, 30; 8:28, 14:10
Ill. from the Prayer of Jabez-Dr. wilkinson & Dr. Mitchel (pg. 46)
That’s it, when we say to God I can’t do, He says-that’s right, now you’re getting it, trust and rely on me & I’ll do it through you.
Phil. 4:13– I can do all things through X who gives me strength
Because
III. The Christian Life is allowing X to live in me and to live through me.
Gal. 2:20 “I myself no longer live, but X lives in me. Si I live my life in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved and gave himself for me.”
II Pet. 1:3 “As we know Jesus better, his divine power gives us everything for living a godly life. He has called us to receive his own glory and goodness!”
How do we get here, X living in us an through us, Brokenness-realizing that on our own it is impossible to live the life He’s called us to-daily realizing our need for dependence on God.
Look at the context of the story we started w/ Lk. 15:1-2
X was w/ tax collectors and sinners-people who knew they needed something and came to X in their need vs. religious leaders who thought they had it all together-no need, just pride.
Journal entry
Brokenness is what I long for, Brokenness is what I need, Brokenness is what you want from me.
Each and every day, I have to start from that place of being broken before God realizing that on my own I can do nothing, If I want to live a life pleasing to God, If I want to have X living through me I have to come to him broken, not in pride, humble knowing my need for Him, His strength, His power to work in and through me today.
