Encourage Men

Introduction

Good morning, dear brothers and sisters in Christ. We are gathered here today, not by chance, but by divine appointment. We are here to embark on a journey of discovery, a journey that will take us into the heart of what it means to be men of God. Our compass for this journey is none other than the Word of God itself, and our guide is the Holy Spirit who dwells within us.

Our destination is found in the words of the apostle Paul, written to the church in Corinth, a bustling, cosmopolitan city not unlike our own. In his first letter to the Corinthians, Paul offers a succinct yet profound exhortation to the men of the church. In 1 Corinthians 16:13-14, he writes:

"Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love."

These words, though few, are packed with wisdom and guidance for us today. They serve as a roadmap to biblical manhood, a blueprint for how we, as men, are to live out our faith in Christ.

Before we begin our journey, let us first turn to the Lord in prayer.

Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for this day, for the breath in our lungs, and for the opportunity to gather together in Your name. We ask that You open our hearts and minds to Your Word today. Guide us as we seek to understand what it means to be men of God. Give us the courage to live out our faith boldly and the strength to stand firm in the face of adversity. Help us to do everything in love, just as Your Son, Jesus Christ, loved us. In His precious name, we pray. Amen.

Now, let us read together from 1 Corinthians 16:13-14. As we read, I invite you to listen carefully to Paul's words, to let them sink into your heart, and to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal their meaning to you.

"Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love."

These words, though simple, are like a lighthouse guiding a ship through a stormy sea. They shine a light on the path we are to follow, illuminating the way to biblical manhood.

Imagine, if you will, a tree. A mighty oak, standing tall and firm in the midst of a forest. Its roots run deep, anchoring it to the ground. Its branches reach high into the sky, strong and unyielding. Yet, despite its strength and stature, the oak tree does not stand alone. It is part of a forest, a community of trees, each one supporting and being supported by the others.

In the same way, we, as men of God, are called to be like that oak tree. We are to be on our guard, standing firm in our faith, courageous and strong. Yet, we do not stand alone. We are part of a community, a body of believers, each one supporting and being supported by the others. And just as the oak tree is nourished by the soil in which it is planted, so too are we nourished by love. For it is love, the love of God and the love of our brothers and sisters in Christ, that gives us the strength to stand firm, the courage to be bold, and the wisdom to guard our hearts and minds against the schemes of the enemy.

So, as we embark on this journey together, let us encourage one another, let us build each other up, and let us spur one another on towards love and good deeds. For it is in doing so that we truly begin to understand what it means to be men of God.

Acting Like Men

Friends, we are here today to talk about a call to action from the apostle Paul. In 1 Corinthians 16:13-14, he says, "Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love." This is a call to all of us, but especially to the men among us.

The first thing Paul tells us is to be on our guard. This is more than just being aware of our surroundings. It's about being spiritually alert. It's about knowing that we are in a battle, not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of evil. It's about recognizing the enemy's tactics and refusing to fall for his lies. It's about guarding our hearts and minds with the truth of God's Word.

Next, Paul tells us to stand firm in the faith. This is not a passive stance, but an active one. It means holding fast to our beliefs, even when the world tells us to let go. It means standing up for truth, even when it's unpopular. It means refusing to compromise our faith, even when it's inconvenient.

Then, Paul tells us to be courageous. This is not about physical strength, but about moral courage. It's about doing what's right, even when it's hard. It's about standing up for the weak, even when it's risky. It's about speaking truth, even when it's not well received.

Finally, Paul tells us to do everything in love. This is not about sentimental feelings, but about selfless action. It's about putting others before ourselves. It's about serving without expecting anything in return. It's about loving others the way Christ loved us.

Now, let's take a closer look at the word "courageous" in this passage. In the original Greek, the word is "andrizomai," which literally means "to act like a man." It's a call to step up, to take responsibility, to lead with integrity. It's a call to be the men God created us to be.

As the great theologian C.S. Lewis once said, "Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point." In other words, it's easy to talk about faith, love, and strength, but it's in the moments of testing that our true character is revealed.

But let's not forget the last part of Paul's instruction: "Do everything in love." This is the glue that holds everything together. Without love, our guard is just paranoia, our faith is just dogma, our courage is just recklessness, and our strength is just brute force. Love is what gives purpose and meaning to everything we do.

So, men, let's rise to the challenge. Let's be on our guard, stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong, and do everything in love. Let's be the men God created us to be. Let's act like men.

Acting Like Men

In the journey of faith, men are called to act like men. Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 ring out like a clarion call, "Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love." This isn't a call to machismo or bravado, but to spiritual maturity and strength. It's a call to be men of God, men of faith, men of love.

Firstly, let's consider what it means to be watchful. This isn't about physical vigilance, but spiritual alertness. It's about being aware of the spiritual battles that rage around us, and the subtle temptations that seek to pull us away from God. It's about keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).

Secondly, standing firm in the faith. This isn't about stubbornness or pride, but about holding fast to the truth of God's Word, even when the world around us is shifting and changing. It's about being rooted and grounded in love, so that we may comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth of the love of Christ (Ephesians 3:17-19).

Thirdly, acting like men. This isn't about conforming to the world's standards of masculinity, but about reflecting the character of Christ in our thoughts, words, and actions. It's about being men of integrity, men of humility, men of grace.

Let's take a moment to look at Ephesians 4:13-15. Here, Paul speaks of growing to become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. This is the kind of manhood we're called to. Not one defined by the world, but one defined by Christ.

Fourthly, being strong. This isn't about physical strength, but about spiritual fortitude. It's about relying on God's strength in our weakness, and finding joy in the journey, even when the road is hard. It's about being strong in the Lord and in his mighty power (Ephesians 6:10).

Finally, doing everything in love. This isn't about sentimental feelings, but about sacrificial action. It's about loving God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and loving our neighbor as ourselves (Mark 12:30-31). It's about demonstrating the love of Christ in our everyday lives.

So, men, let's rise to this call. Let's be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong, and do everything in love. Let's be men of God, men of faith, men of love.

Acting Like Men: Encouraging Men to Be Courageous and Strong

In the hustle and bustle of life, it's easy for us to lose sight of who we are and what we're called to be. As men, we're not just called to exist, but to thrive, to be courageous, to be strong. This is a call that echoes from the ancient pages of the Bible, a call that still rings true today.

In the book of Joshua, we find a powerful command given to Joshua, "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9). This command, while given to Joshua, is not exclusive to him. It's a call to all men, a call to be courageous, to be strong, not in our own might, but in the power of the Lord.

The first aspect of this call is courage. Courage is not the absence of fear, but the ability to face fear head-on. It's about stepping out in faith, even when the odds are stacked against us. It's about standing firm in the face of adversity, trusting that God is with us, that He will never leave us nor forsake us.

Research by the American Psychological Association has shown that courage is a key factor in overcoming obstacles and achieving success. It's not just about physical bravery, but also about moral and emotional courage, the ability to stand up for what is right, to face our fears and insecurities, to persevere in the face of adversity.

The second aspect of this call is strength. Strength is not just about physical power, but about inner strength, the strength of character, the strength of conviction. It's about being firm in our beliefs, standing firm in our faith, not wavering in the face of opposition.

In his book "The Knowledge of the Holy," A.W. Tozer wrote, "God is looking for men who will stand in the gap, men who will not be swayed by the opinions of others, but who will stand firm in their faith, trusting in the Lord and His promises." This quote beautifully encapsulates the essence of what it means to be strong, to stand firm in our faith, trusting in the Lord and His promises.

The third aspect of this call is reliance on God. We're not called to be strong and courageous in our own might, but in the power of the Lord. It's about recognizing our limitations, acknowledging our dependence on God, and trusting in His strength to overcome any obstacles that come our way.

Research by the Barna Group has shown that men who rely on God, who trust in His strength, are more likely to overcome obstacles, to persevere in the face of adversity, to live a life of purpose and meaning. It's not about our strength, but about God's strength working in and through us.

So, as men, let's heed this call. Let's be courageous, let's be strong, not in our own might, but in the power of the Lord. Let's encourage one another, let's spur one another on, let's stand firm in our faith, trusting in the Lord and His promises. For the Lord our God is with us, He will never leave us nor forsake us. He is our strength, our shield, our fortress, our deliverer. In Him, we can be strong and courageous.

Conclusion

Brothers, we've spent this time together, reflecting on the words of Paul in 1 Corinthians 16:13-14. We've been called to "act like men." But what does that mean? It's not about conforming to the world's standards of manhood, but about embodying the character of Christ.

We've learned that biblical manhood is about standing firm in the faith. It's about being watchful, being strong. It's about doing everything in love. It's about being like Jesus. And that's not a small task. It's a lifelong journey.

In the coming week, I want to challenge each of us to be more like Jesus. To stand firm in our faith, even when the world around us is shaking. To be watchful, to be aware of the spiritual battle that is raging around us. To be strong, not in our own strength, but in the strength that comes from God.

And above all, to do everything in love. Because love is the defining characteristic of a follower of Jesus. Love is what sets us apart. Love is what makes us different. Love is what makes us men of God.

So, let's commit to being men of God. Let's commit to being more like Jesus. Let's commit to standing firm, being watchful, being strong, and doing everything in love.

Closing Prayer:

Let's pray. Father, we thank You for Your Word. We thank You for the challenge and the encouragement it brings. We thank You for Jesus, our perfect example of biblical manhood.

As we go into this week, help us to be more like Him. Help us to stand firm in our faith. Help us to be watchful. Help us to be strong. And help us to do everything in love.

We know we can't do this on our own. We need Your help. We need Your strength. We need Your love. So, we ask for Your guidance. We ask for Your wisdom. We ask for Your grace.

And we commit to being men of God. We commit to being more like Jesus. We commit to standing firm, being watchful, being strong, and doing everything in love. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Benediction:

And now, may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all, now and forevermore. Amen.

Go in peace. Stand firm. Be watchful. Be strong. Do everything in love. Be men of God. Be more like Jesus. Amen.
