Being Poor In Spirit And Dependent

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. - Matthew 5:3

It is a true spiritual principle that those who come to the Lord full and not needing anything will never receive anything of the Lord. The wonderful picture is given by our Lord Jesus Christ of a small child asking a father for bread. The response of the father surely always will be to feed the child and not give him a stone to eat! “If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” (Luke 11:13). Being poor in spirit means that we are literally be beggars, asking our Heavenly Father for our needs spiritually. God is glorified and pleased when we have this utter reliance on him and not dependence on our Bible knowledge, experiences and other things.

We are following a crucified King who died on a Roman cross. This Savior of the world died after only 33 years of life on this earth. His life was constantly dependent on the work and power of the Holy Spirit of God. From the baptism to the wilderness, with every Word our Lord spoke He relied on the Spirit. Thus should not our lives be spent in the same way with the same dependency? Lord, teach us to be dependent again on you. To cast ourselves on you and get our help from You. Our days are few and passing, the time is coming soon when we will be in eternity with You, teach us now to be dependent, fruitful and to share your heart for a lost world that is going to hell and who you died for in Great Love. Amen
