I just want to say thank you and Happy Mother’s Day to all our moms out here today.

You are truly a blessing from the Lord in the lives of so many husbands and children.

And it is good to see people today honoring their moms and wives by coming out to church.

Being a mom today is a tough job.

It is hard, it causes sleepless nights, it brings more than your share of trouble into your life considering the often thankless job of raising kids.

I saw a comic this past week that kind of illustrated some of this

It is from Comic Strip called Flight Deck (May 10, 2008)

It shows a couple of boys talking to their dad about what they are going to give their mother for mother’s day.

The older boy says,

“Instead of just another bottle of perfume fro mom on Mother’s Day, we’re giving her a promissory note stating that we will never cause another problem, fight or get in trouble ever again.”

The Dad replies “You really expect to keep those promises?”

Then the younger son realizing the impossibility of that responds, “Could I borrow money for a bottle of perfume?”

It is impossible for kids not to cause problems for our moms because our moms care so much that they will always be concerned with our lives and how things are going.

God has designed moms with a caring heart and soul.

But even so, even though I believe God has designed moms to have a heart and love for their kids, it is still hard to be a mom sometimes, and even harder to be a mom that glorifies the Lord.

This morning, in honor of all the mom’s here today, we are going to look at a woman who is a model of motherhood and learn from her in how mom’s can be godly moms.

Turn with me this morning to 1 Samuel 1:1 (p. 190)

Actually while I am applying this to moms for Mother’s Day, this is something that will be applicable to each one of us here, mother or father, single or married, male or female, because ultimately this is about how we can be godly people.

1 Samuel 1:1-8

1 There was a certain man from Ramathaim (Ray Muh thay uhm), a Zuphite from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 2 He had two wives; one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah (Pee nin uh). Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.

3 Year after year this man went up from his town to worship and sacrifice to the LORD Almighty at Shiloh, where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were priests of the LORD. 4 Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters. 5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, and the LORD had closed her womb. 6 And because the LORD had closed her womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her. 7 This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat. 8 Elkanah her husband would say to her, "Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?"

The first thing I want us to see here is that

A Godly Mom will face Problems

“Well Gee Scott, that is a great encouragement. What kind of Mother’s Day message is this?”

Listen, it is supposed to be encouraging.

I think too often people are thinking, and moms in particular, that if I have problems in my life, I must not be living in a godly way and I must be a bad mom.

That is a lie straight from Satan.

Listen, Jesus told us that we are going to have trouble in this life.

John 16:33

33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
